Purpose of Position :
As Project Manager this position will be the prime contact with the customer on projects and manage the efforts of the design team in all aspects of design and fabrication of curtain wall, storefront, and entrance portions of building projects.
The Project Manager is responsible for monitoring and control of all aspects of the project budget. The Project Manager will oversee the design team to ensure that engineering principles, including structural, thermal and acoustics are considered in turning architectural concepts into final designs communicated effectively through shop and fabrication drawings.
The Project Manager will follow projects through fabrication and construction to ensure design intent is fully realized and a successful project attained.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities :
Project Scope and Understanding
- Review proposals, takeoffs, specifications, and architectural / structural drawings to understand and interpret project scope and requirements.
- Complete Project Specifications Review Form and Project Scope Review Form.
- Review and understand budget.
- Attend Kickoff meeting.
Customer Contact
- Telephone the customer for introductions, exchange contact information, and establish preferred method of communication.
- Request any outstanding information or updated documents. Verify drawings and specifications are most current.
- Verify timeline for project related to shop drawings, onsite date for material, building closing date.
- Follow-up with written communication to verify startup information.
Schedule
- Able to produce and maintain an external project schedule with our customer to meet the overall project schedule
- Produce an internal drafting / engineering schedule on various platforms and maintain it as required.
- Maintain and update all required internal schedules / tasks list varies platforms
Design Assist
- Attend via conference call or in person design assist calls / meetings with our customer, Design Team and General Contractor.
- Maintain a constraint log and assign the appropriate team to each action item.
- Work with Design Team to develop design solutions that meet architectural intent and all applicable governing codes.
- Identify project related design issues and gaps, and working with the design team, develop design resolutions as required to complete shop drawing preparation
- Work with estimating to price up options during this part of the project and keep in mind overall project budget and schedule.
- RFI questions as required
- Provide minutes from meetings as needed and assign action items
- Chair internal meeting with project stakeholders to review weekly tasks, deliverable schedule and outstanding items.
- Review System drawings and mock up drawings to confirm they meet our scope and the Design Team’s expectations
- Submit thermal reports as requested
Design Shop Drawings
- Issue Drafting Work Order with input from Engineering Consultant.
- Research and understand manufacturer systems, standard details, fabrication instructions and installation instructions.
- Answer questions and monitor progress of BIM Modeler and Job Captain in preparation of shop drawings in Revit / AutoCAD including cover, general notes, plans, elevations, sections, and details.
- Review performance requirements of project with Design Engineer.
- Issue initial Product Data Submittal
- Work with Design Team to develop design solutions that meet architectural intent and all applicable governing codes.
- Answer questions and monitor progress of architectural technologists and architectural designers on projects in preparation of shop drawings in AutoCAD including cover, general notes, plans, elevations, sections, and details.
- Identify project related design issues and gaps, and working with the design team, develop design resolutions as required to complete shop drawing preparation.
- Particular attention to be focused on identifying and solving fabrication and site installation related issues in the shop drawings prior to fabrication and installation.
- Organize and Chair 50% Design Review meeting, where required on projects.
- Review shop drawings at each submittal stage.
- Submit shop drawings to customer.
- Review first submission review comments, issue drafting work order, review completed mark-ups and issue revised shop drawings to customer.
Procurement & Buyouts
- Complete all Material Takeoffs including but not limited to; Aluminum extrusions, anchors, backpans, infills, steel reinforcement, system accessories, brake metal etc.
- Issue the required documentation to our internal design team to sign off before glass is ordered.
- Generate purchase orders in the ERP software and submit to the department manager for approval.
- Submit approved purchase order to suppliers with the required documentation for fabrication
Fabrication Drawings
- Review fabrication drawings based on approved shop drawings, fabrication instructions, installation instructions and all other applicable documents.
- Particular attention to be paid to identifying and solving fabrication related issues in the fabrication drawings prior to fabrication.
- Issue Drafting Work Order for CNC / Fab Package.
- Issue Release to Manufacture (RTM) on projects.
- Produce Production orders in the ERP Software and consume material from Inventory
Fabrication
- Issue fabrication package to shop floor.
- Attend Fabrication Kickoff Meeting.
- Daily tour the shop floor to oversee that the work meets the design intent and quality standards.
- Monitor schedule and communicate to customer.
Communication
- Work closely with internal design team including design engineers, structural engineers, architectural designers, and architectural technologists.
- Attend internal kickoff and design team meetings as required.
- Communicate regularly with Contract Manager and Plant Manager providing update on status of work tasks and promptly identifying and resolving conflicts or issues.
- Communicate with Engineering Consultant and / or Engineering Manager regarding technical issues / changes on projects.
- Communicate with outside customers, architects, engineers, etc. as required.
Knowledge, Qualifications, and Skill Requirements :
- Fundamental understanding of manufacturing engineering including workflow processes, automation, software, CNC, etc.
- Understanding of basic engineering principles, including structural design, materials technology and building science principles.
- Good understanding of building construction. Knowledge related to curtain wall, storefront, entrances, and window products preferred.
- Experience with AutoCAD fundamentals.
- Experience with Autodesk 3D programs such as Revit of Navisworks would be an asset
- Effective communication skills at all levels both written and verbal.
- Effective skills in analytical thinking and problem solving.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks and ability to effectively manage conflict.
- Ability to work in teams to obtain results, self-motivated / directed, minimal supervision required.
Education and Experience :
- Associates or bachelor’s degree an asset, but not required.
- Engineering background and experience an asset but not required.
- Experience in architecture aluminum industry including curtain wall with an understanding of building envelope science technology preferred, but not required.
