Position Summary

This position aligns with and contributes to the college's mission and goals BC Core Themes of Student Success, Teaching and Learning Excellence by providing quality circulation services and reliable access to necessary resources in a variety of formats to meet the academic and accessibility needs of all BC learners.

It collaborates with other Library departments and the greater community in learning opportunities which support and advance pluralism and student success.

This is Part-Time (16 hous workweek) project. Depending on funding availability, the position may be extended.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Position Salary Range : $16,324.80 / year - $21,667.20 / year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations.

Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This position is expected to NOT be eligible for benefits because eligibility is limited only to employees working at least an average of 80 hours in eligible employment for more than 6 consecutive months and at least 8 hours a month.

Eligible positions are eligible for certain benefits.

The employee is scheduled to work 16 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

About the Department

The Library Media Center plays a central role in accomplishing Bellevue College s mission and goals by being student-centered and committed to teaching excellence.

In order to advance the lifelong educational development of students, the Library continually strengthens its collections and services in breadth and depth, supporting increased curricular offerings and varied instructional modes of delivery.

Essential Functions

Maintain Library Circulation desk operations, assist patrons with locating, retrieving, and checking out materials, provide excellent customer service, assist in directing the work of student employees, maintain library operations, and implement College and Library policies as appropriate.

Participate in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for library users, BC faculty and staff.

  • Check out and discharge library materials including books, periodicals, DVDs, and course reserves
  • Locate materials through online library catalog search and / or physical search
  • Check computer for patron initiated material requests and expired holds; process items with holds and remove expired items from hold shelf
  • Respond to and resolve patron inquiries, complaints, and feedback in person, over the phone, and via email
  • Handle patron fine payments, process transaction in the automated library system, and make adjustments and waivers as needed
  • Assist Circulation Manager in training and directing student assistants in general circulation functions
  • Maintain ongoing operation of public service desk including opening and closing procedures
  • Assist in the maintenance of the entire print collection, including shelf-reading books and periodicals to ensure order and availability of materials
  • Maintain orderly appearance of library premises and materials
  • Monitor lost & found
  • Perform routine tasks such as typing, filing, answering phones, making signage and photocopies

Perform other library related tasks as assigned by the circulation manager

  • Participate in library initiatives, projects, meetings, committees, task forces, and working groups
  • Perform tasks to assist and support other library departments such as reference and technical services

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School graduation. Any combination of relevant education and / or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a functional area of a library.
  • Demonstrated experience with Windows operating systems, internet search engines, and common desktop software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams.
  • Familiarity with a library management system.
  • Experience working at a public-facing customer service desk.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with both internal colleagues and external customers of the library.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in library technology or a related field.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience using Exlibris Alma.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural, multidisciplinary team.
