About the Job

The Regional Admissions Counselor, as a member of the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Admissions team, is responsible for recruiting prospective students for UMD through independent territory management and travel, prospective student communication, admission presentations, and candidate file review.

The Regional Admissions Counselor plans and implements a student recruitment program to meet enrollment goals in a targeted geographic area (Minneapolis / St.

Paul area) with diverse student populations. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, self-motivated, and results-oriented, able to think creatively and implement new initiatives.

The ideal candidate will also have a talent for fostering relationships and providing excellent customer service to students, families, mentors, and other influencers within schools, communities, and organizations from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The selected candidate is required to live within the Minneapolis / St. Paul area and will be expected to establish, operate, and maintain a home-based office within the market.

This is a full-time, 12-month, P&A, annually renewable, exempt position based in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area. Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications.

The salary range is $47,000-$52,000. This position has an excellent benefits package, including medical / dental / vision / life / LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, 22 PTO days, and University paid holidays.

Position Duties

RECRUITMENT TERRITORY MANAGEMENT 75%

  • Responsible for independently designing and managing a tailored recruitment plan for assigned territory, focused on Minneapolis / St.
  • Paul area to meet short-term and long-term enrollment goals;
  • Serve as a mentor and resource for fellow admissions counselors on territory management, Slate management and more;
  • Represent UMD at regional fairs / events and high school / community college visits;
  • Build relationships within high schools and community colleges throughout the Minneapolis / St. Paul area, including those individuals who coordinate grant-based programs such as College Possible and Upward Bound;
  • Meet with prospective students and parents to provide individual and group counseling on educational options and alternatives;
  • Territory management, which involves application file review for first-year and transfer students, make admissions recommendations based on academic requirements, program choice, and compatibility, and providing additional follow-up contact via phone call, email, and text;
  • Encourage applications for admission and maintain contact with applicants with incomplete files;
  • Monitor admitted student progress through financial aid, scholarship, housing, advisement, registration, and orientation processes;
  • Assist UMD offices in special services or programs designed to interact with underrepresented student populations and coordinate contact with prospective students to ensure a unified and seamless presentation of UMD programs, services, and opportunities to these same student populations;
  • Participate in regular phone and email conversations with supervisor and attend office staff meetings via Zoom.

DATA COLLECTION / EVALUATION & REPORTING 10%

  • Assess progress / results and review reports related to recruitment initiatives to determine effectiveness;
  • Ensure compliance of recruiting initiatives with UMD policies and procedures and with professional affiliations and best practices;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the trends, regulations, and other factors that affect admission and recruitment activities.

VISIT RESPONSIBILITIES 10%

  • Travel to and participate in on-campus visit programming as needed. This may include Campus Preview and Admitted Student Day events, etc;
  • Assist in the coordination and participation of Minneapolis / St. Paul area visits and event opportunities.

ADDITIONAL OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS RESPONSIBILITIES 5%

  • Travel to campus as needed throughout the school year to participate in staff development and training;
  • Participate as a collaborative and supportive member of the Admissions team;
  • Devote time to staying current in the field, participating in professional development opportunities, and bringing innovation and new information to the team;
  • Participate in and grow a professional network of contacts on behalf of UMD. This includes membership and involvement in TCRAR (Twin Cities Regional Admissions Representatives), MACAC committees, MnACC, and other professional organizations;
  • Contribute to program development and analyze data to understand trends. Make recommendations for improvement to Admissions practices;
  • Serve on campus and UMN system committees as requested / elected;
  • Actively seek to advance equity, diversity, inclusiveness, and social justice within the campus community;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least four years of relevant experience or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience - relevant experience can include student experience;
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel regionally, sometimes overnight, for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to establish, operate, and maintain a home-based office within the Minneapolis / St. Paul area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of professional experience working within Student Recruitment, Office of Admissions, Student Affairs, or Academic Affairs.
  • Undergraduate student experience will be considered;
  • Ability to skillfully present to large and diverse audiences;
  • Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in practice and as a part of personal growth and development;
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and external parties;
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills;
  • Fluency in a second language-preference for Spanish, Hmong, or Somali;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with limited supervision;
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service;
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Google Suite, Slate, Peoplesoft, and Perceptive Content;
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate recruiting plans;
  • Ability to analyze and use data to guide work;
  • UMD alumnus or have considerable familiarity with UMD and its programs.
