The Office of Equity Assurance at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an ADA Coordinator.

The ADA Coordinator assures that University programs, policies, procedures, and facilities are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities.

This position tracks University progress relating to compliance initiatives related to state and federal laws relating to persons with disabilities, files all necessary reports, and provides consultative services to employing units and offices.

The scope of responsibility includes faculty, staff, and student employment, as well as public and student access to educational programs and facilities.

The primary components of the responsibility include :

  • Coordinating policies and procedures related to persons with disabilities within the organization.
  • Providing ADA related employment and facility interpretation, training, and advice on compliance to all sectors of the University community.
  • Ensures that appropriate processes are in place to provide prompt and equitable resolutions of complaints and inquiries from campus employees and students, as well as public compliance with ADA.
  • Responsible for all compliance issues related to facilities and ADA compliance on all WVU campuses.
  • Assuring that necessary updates are made of the ADA self-evaluation plan.
  • Works in cooperation with the Department of Human Resources to assist with all requests of accommodations for employees with a disability.
  • Serving as a resource to the University regarding ADA compliance for events, workshops, public events, and non-credit programs.
  • Ensuring that prompt and equitable responses are made to inquiries from university departments, employees, and the public regarding compliance with the ADA and other applicable federal and state laws relating to disability issues.
  • Maintaining a record of all employee disability and accommodation requests and referrals, relevant documentation, and the resolution.
  • Serving as a resource to regional campuses and the Extension Service related to their unique disability issues.
  • Maintaining current information regarding state and federal laws and regulations as well as the best practices of other universities and private employers relating to the University’s employment policies and procedures for individuals with a disability.
  • Ensuring that University-related information is readily available on accommodations and policies relating to employees with disabilities.
  • Serving as the primary contact point between the organization and relevant state / federal agencies.
  • Maintaining professional competency and knowledge of ADA through a comprehensive professional development plan.
  • Assists with compliance in highly sensitive and important areas of Title VI, Title VII and Title IX.
  • Assist with making record of any discrimination complaint related to ADA, Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, regardless of whether the respondent is a student, employee or third party for investigation, on all campuses as appropriate.
  • Provides resources, supportive measures, or referrals to students and staff involved in complaints or investigations.

Qualifications

An earned bachelor’s degree in a Social Work, Counseling, Human Resources, Public Administration, Educational Administration, or field in a discipline related to disability compliance.

However, any equivalent combination of education and / or experience which provides an applicant with the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job, is acceptable.

  • The successful applicant must have a minimum of four (4) years of experience with facilities or accommodations as related to accessibility and civil rights compliance for individuals with disabilities, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Knowledge of ADA / Section 504 Compliance and the ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  • Ability to maintain a normal work schedule, with occasional deviations as may be required by unusual circumstances.
  • Ability to travel to regional campuses or other locations as needed.
  • Excellent computer and word processing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage personal time and schedule meetings with others.
  • Ability to maintain information with confidence, using good judgment and discretion with highly personal and sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, draft and complete written reports in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ability to work well with people in dealing with personal concerns and / or disputed issues.
  • Ability to learn Title VI, VII, and other applicable civil rights and employment laws, Title IX, VAWA, FERPAA, HIPAA, Affirmative Action, Equal

Preferred Qualifications :

Master’s degree.
