The Utah State Hospital is seeking a Security and Enforcement Officer. This facility includes multiple units for children, youth, adults and forensic patients in an inpatient mental health setting.

With a campus spanning 300 acres, it will be your duty to secure the campus and ensure the safety of those being treated here as well as staff and visitors.

As a Security and Enforcement Officer, your principle duties will be :

  • Maintaining patient safety and security
  • Monitoring patients, staff and visitors on campus
  • Monitoring materials, equipment and property

The Ideal Candidate

  • Must have Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification as a Special Functions Officer (SFO) or higher
  • Will have experience working with mentally ill individuals
  • Will have a flexible schedule
  • Must be willing to provide on-call coverage when needed

This position is working 40 hours a week, full-time with benefits.

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP) :

3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other medical insurance coverage.

5 dental plan options, with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage.

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS) :

Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7 / 1 / 2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.

Employees hired on or after 7 / 1 / 2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.

Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))

Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Your employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off :

Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.

We have 12 paid holidays.

This recruitment may be used to fill future full time benefited positions vacancies when they become available at the Utah State Hospital.

Example of Duties

  • Provides building and grounds security; secures buildings, and protects against theft, vandalism, inappropriate entry, fire hazards, acts of violence, etc.
  • Controls access to institutions, installations and facilities; checks identification, vehicles, packages, etc. Periodically inspects buildings grounds fences, gates and all other possible means of entrance and exit.
  • Enforces laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Coordinates law enforcement and investigative efforts with federal, state and / or local agencies.
  • Coordinates and monitors activities of residents as well as visitors entering the facility; including law enforcement and other agency personnel, resident visitors and the general public.
  • Conducts investigations into allegations of a variety of inappropriate activities, rules infractions or illegal actions.
  • Responds and administers first-aid treatment to anyone in need.
  • Drives a car, passenger or courier van, bus, or truck for pick-up and delivery of materials, or transportation of staff, clients, inmates, etc.
  • Assesses situation and applies appropriate interventions to prevent or resolve crisis situations.
  • Communicate with the receiving organization concerning the receipt and security of arriving patients / clients / inmates to their facilities;

follow local protocols in handling patients / clients / inmates as they change location.

  • Monitoring / Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • The ability to see details at a distance.

  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.
