At Houston Methodist the SeniorIntraoperative Neuromonitoring (IOM) Technologist position isresponsible for performing neurodiagnostic procedures in theIntraoperative monitoring field as well as all IOM modalitiesrequired as a registered neurodiagnostic technologist.

In additionto performing the duties of the IOM Technologist this position isefficient in independently performing IOM modalities includingSSEPs TceMEP EMG (including triggered) ABRs Phase Reversal andcortical mapping.

When not scheduled for an IOM case the Senior IOMTechnologist may be asked to perform ambulatory and long termmonitoring (LTM) electroencephalograms (EEG) and / or visualbrainstem and somatosensory evoked potential (EP) procedures and / ormonitor epilepsy patients according to hospital and departmentalpolicy and procedures This position delivers exceptional patientcare per guidelines established by the department to ensure optimalpatient safety and customer service and practices Patient andFamilyCentered Care.

  • Ensuresunderstanding by the patient and staff the purpose of theprocedures and answers questions regarding the procedures.
  • Identifies and anticipates potential problems communicatesappropriately and effectively concerns to appropriate management;

Role modelshealthy work relationships such as mitigation of conflict leadingproblemsolving and resolution efforts. Anticipates needs of otherteam members;

  • Serves aspreceptor mentor and resource to less experience staff. Providestechnical expertise to peers and / or noncredentialed team members asappropriate.
  • Recommendsinitiatives to improve department scores for employee engagement ondepartmentscorecard.

SERVICEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Independentlyconducts patient assessments. Recognizes and teaches peers drug andphysiological status effects on activitymonitored.
  • In addition toperforming all IOM modalities independently performs EEG monitoringduring : Wada PET ictal SPECT studies ABRs Phase Reversal andcortical mapping with indirect supervision as appropriate.

Conductsintermediate to advanced technical troubleshooting and artifactidentification and elimination; understands and follows concepts ofdigital equipment and electrical safety with regards to theequipment.

Sharesunderstanding with peers of EEG technology and its uses in theepilepsy monitoring unit as well as during epilepsy surgery.

Independently monitors epilepsy monitoringpatients.

  • Independentlyperforms EP studies or other EEG studies as assigned when there areno scheduled IOMcases.
  • Role modelsbehaviors and skills through peertopeer accountability towardsimproving department score for patientsatisfaction.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Identifiesclinically significant events and follows policy and procedureregarding critical test results maintaining the patients safetythrough communication to other patient care support staff duringthese procedures asappropriate.
  • Identifiesand assesses issues and opportunities for improvement andimplements changes following managerial review. Follows up onaction items to ensure completion.

Contributes towards improvingquality and safety scores on departmentscorecard.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Chargesaccurately for procedures and logging the patient data. Submits allreports billing and other paperwork within a timelymanner.
  • Uses resourcesefficiently; does not waste supplies. Ensures inventories of majorsupplies are never depleted. Selfmotivated to independently managetime effectively and prioritize daily tasks minimizing incidentalovertime.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Continues to learnand apply intermediate to advanced EEG and / or EP signal recognitionrelevant medical terminology anatomy physiology contraindicationsfor activation procedures instrumentation and preparation for use.

Trains in ENDprocedures.

Offersinnovative solutions through participation in performanceimprovement activities. Completes and updates the individualdevelopment plan (IDP) on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION

  • Must have one of the following :
  • High Schooldiploma or equivalent education (examples include : GED verificationof homeschool equivalency partial or full completion ofpostsecondary education etc.)
  • Completion ofan Accredited Electroneurodiagnostic (END)program.
  • Associates degree or higher in ascience related field from an accredited college oruniversity

WORKEXPERIENCE

Two yearsexperience in IOMprocedures

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • BLSBasic Life Support (AHA) AND
  • RCNIM CertifiedNeurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (ABRET) OR
  • REPT Registered EvokedPotentials Technologist (ABRET) OR
  • EEG Canadian BoardRegistered EEG Technologists (CBRET) OR
  • REEGT RegisteredElectroencephalographic Technician (ABRET)

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Knowledgeablein correct IOM EEG and / or EPperformance

  • Understands andfollows concepts of digital equipment and electrical safety withregards to theequipment
  • Knowledge ofalternate montages protocols and alternate equipment settings andtheir effects on the testdata
