Compensation and benefits

Starting

$80,000-$95,000 / year

  • 25 days of paid time off and 11 paid holidays, plus year-end office closure between December 25 and January 1

The job

The Senior Communications Manager at 1% for the Planet will be instrumental in shaping and executing our communications strategy to enhance our mission, and drive stakeholder growth and retention.

This person will grow and support a dynamic team in developing integrated campaigns that effectively engage our diverse network of members and donors, and elevate our global presence across various channels.

This role demands a strategic thinker with exceptional writing skills, as they will be responsible for crafting compelling narratives that resonate with our audience and drive engagement.

The Senior Communications Manager’s leadership will foster collaboration across teams, ensuring that our communications align with organizational goals and leverage data-driven insights to maximize impact.

This position requires the management of a staff person with the opportunity to build a team and work cross-collaboratively to service our thriving community of stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

Integrated Communication and Public Relations (PR) Campaign Strategy

Build and oversee a comprehensive communications strategy and calendar, ensuring alignment across internal teams (e.g., Membership, Business Development, Environmental Partners, Business Operations, Development) and calendars (e.

g., sales calendar, paid marketing campaigns calendar, events calendar, development calendar, PR calendar, etc.).

  • Define and refine our communications strategies to include social media, blog, and email.
  • Lead communication strategic planning and process development, fostering cross-collaboration and managing staff and vendors to meet organizational goals.
  • Working with leadership and public relations partners, support PR efforts to increase visibility in major publications and popular channels.
  • Conceive thought leadership initiatives and member highlights in 1% for the Planet communications and PR outreach.
  • Streamline project management processes across the communications team and all teams to enhance collaboration and campaign consistency.
  • Utilize analytics to refine email and social media strategies and guide communications efforts, also tracking key metrics to assess effectiveness.
  • Manage the Communications Specialist and support the social media, email, and blog strategies, ensuring consistent copy and tone and resonate content that drives growth and retention.
  • Review content across channels and support the creative process to foster innovative ideas.
  • Help field and delegate internal requests while ensuring the team meets deadlines and addresses roadblocks.
  • Working with our Senior Marketing Manager to evolve and implement our SEO strategy.

Content creation and management

  • Manage communications projects from inception to completion, including strategy development, work plans and timelines.
  • Collaborate with Senior Designer to ensure timely completion of creative assets for social media, PR and communications projects.
  • Serve as a copywriter and editor, supporting communication and PR objectives while advancing our storytelling strategy.
  • Evolve and maintain our internal communications resources and processes.
  • Write member case studies to support member satisfaction and sales objectives and create compelling content that resonates with our audience.
  • Write and edit PR content, including articles for platforms like Fast Company.
  • Create longer-form content for special events and educational campaigns while overseeing overall content quality.
  • Extract insights from surveys and best practices to inform campaign and content strategies.
  • Regularly report analytics on social engagement, audience growth, lead generation and other salient data.

Stakeholder engagement, retention and growth support

  • Enhance overall communication strategies in support of our key, global stakeholders : members, donors, environmental partners.
  • Collaborate on stakeholder retention initiatives, including supporting key accounts to enhance their storytelling and communications plans.
  • Support the creation and planning of member toolkits and develop a project schedule for upcoming initiatives like event and award communications.
  • Align integrated campaigns with broader organizational goals, involving cross-team collaboration for maximum impact.
  • Ensure consistent communication and targeted content that aligns with sales objectives, leveraging data and insights to improve performance and audience targeting.
  • Collaborate with key players in brand strategy, marketing, and business development to evolve and understand Ideal Customer Profiles (ICPs) and personas.
  • Craft strategy to identify inbound lead opportunities within social media comments, direct messages, and followers within our greater networks and bring them into the sales pipeline.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • 7+ years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field, with a focus on strategic messaging and media relations.
  • 2+ years of experience in people management and team leadership.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in using data to drive strategy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Knowledge of or interest in environmental issues, purpose-led.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Strong understanding of digital communication platforms and social media strategies.
  • Experience in crisis communications and reputation management.
  • Sales experience is a plus.
  • SEO experience is a plus.
