PRIMARY PURPOSE / GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

Reporting to the Director of Career Planning & Resources, the Assistant Director provides career counseling for students and alumnae, facilitates programs, manages student workers, helps lead career-related experiential learning opportunities and resources at Scripps College, andserves as a thought partner to help inform departmental strategy.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Career Counseling

  • Provide individual and group career counseling to students and alumnae including but not limited to : career decision making, graduate school and gap year research and applications, personal statement review, resume and cover letter critique, job and internship search strategies, mock interviews, networking strategies, finding international opportunities, and salary negotiation.
  • Administer and interpret standardized assessment instruments including Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory.
  • Serve as Pre-Health Liaison by planning and coordinating Health & Science-related events with Keck Science counterparts.

Program Management

  • Plan and coordinate annual career programs such as the Emerging Professionals Program; liaise with Alumnae and Family Engagement teams to engage alumnae and parent expertis as volunteers where relevant.
  • Conceptualize, facilitate, and advertise career services workshops, trainings, and special events including alum panels / networking events;

assist in campus-wide initiatives engaging cross-campus partners and student leaders.

Serve as a strategist for increasing student use of Olive Grove, the College's networking and mentorship platform.

Departmental Administration

  • Manage Career Consultant Program, including recruitment and training of 5-8 Career Consultants annually; oversee drop-in hours scheduling and coverage.
  • Serve as liaison to and conduct outreach activities with student identity CLORGs, faculty, and campus partners including SCORE and 7C support offices.
  • Serve as thought partner in development of efforts to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in the department's work.
  • Market job and internship referrals from stakeholders and resources, including directories, databases, and web resources to student population.
  • Assist in the development, administration, and evaluation of departmental programs including the Summer Internship Grant Program.
  • Represent the CP&R office programs and strategy at events with members of the Scripps community such as family events, prospective and new student events, and alumnae events.
  • Assist with development and execution of programs and events to connect students with broader Scripps College community including employers, alumnae, and families.
  • Active support for the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES :

Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Strong candidate will illustrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to building working relationships with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Maintain meticulous attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with databases, websites, and social media is a plus.
  • An understanding of small, private, liberal arts colleges, and hold a commitment to women's education.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :

Bachelor's degree in counseling, student development, higher education, orany combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job.

Master's degree is preferred.

Experience in programming and outreach, workshop facilitation, research, computer technology, and assessment is preferred.

Minimum of 2 years working in a college setting and proven work experience with increasing responsibility in recruiting, career services, and career counseling strongly preferred.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

This is a regular status, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-exempt position.

The regular hours for this full-time position are 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m., Monday-Friday including some evenings and weekends.

Hours may vary based on the needs of the College or department.

Hourly rate range : $30.00-$32.00. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, andtraining.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY :

Will supervise student employees.
