Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant Professor will teach Mortuary Science core courses , provide laboratory and clinical instruction, must have knowledge of human anatomy, chemistry, pathology and blood borne diseases, recruit, advise and assist with the retention of students, and answer student inquiries in a timely manner.

The Assistant Professor must also have knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous compounds and infectious waste, laboratory safety requirements, conduct a minimum of five office hours per week, help to develop and teach appropriate online courses, participate in the college governance process and college-wide committees, participate fully in curriculum development and revision, recommend textbook and other instructional materials, assist in the development of an effective means of assessing student learning outcomes in accordance with the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) standards, and advise the Mortuary Science Student Organization.

Required Qualifications

Associate of Applied Science degree or its credit hour equivalent and degree in Mortuary Science from an accredited program is required;

as well, hold a Master’s degree in related field or obtain a Master’s degree within five years of hire is required.

  • Must be licensed or eligible for license in the District of Columbia.
  • Applicant must have knowledge of current practices in the field and knowledge of all state / District and federal laws, rules and regulations.

In accordance with HR policies, the candidate for the position of Assistant Professor must possess the following qualifications / experience.

In accordance with HR policies, the Assistant Professor must have the additional qualifications / experience. A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications :

  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  • At least three years of full-time teaching experience, including two years in an institution of higher education.
  • Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union) : This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference : The Residency Preference Amendment Act of , D.C. Law 7-, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application.

An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight proofs of bona fide District residency.

Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven consecutive years.

Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace : Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of , the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his / her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation : Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.

The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.

The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
