Assistant Professor: Instrumental Music and Applied Woodwinds

Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Arts and Humanities, and Music Program is seeking an accomplished performer and versatile music educator and woodwind specialist who will coordinate the instrumental music and music education programs.

The responsibilities of this assistant professor position include teaching undergraduate courses and individual lessons face to face, with possible opportunities for hybrid or online instruction;

and initiating and overseeing recruitment for the program in the DC metro area. The prevailing candidate will coordinate the movement of students from the AA to BM and MAT degrees, while ensuring curricular adherence to accepted standards of the discipline.

This faculty member will foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration, in the program and across the division, to better share the importance and beauty of the fine arts and humanities with the larger campus community.

Other duties include serving on Program, Division, College, and / or University committees, maintaining an active performance schedule and research agenda, working collaboratively with program and division faculty, performing service, administrative, and assessment-related tasks to enhance the quality of the program.

Engagement in diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service is strongly preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaches undergraduate courses in applied woodwinds, woodwind ensembles, woodwind methods, and instrumental conducting
  • Teaches undergraduate courses in music education and graduate courses in the Master of Arts in Teaching program
  • Provides student supports (advising, mentoring, co-curricular design) across AA, BM, and MAT degrees
  • Coordinates instrumental music and the music education programs; serves as liaison providing curricular support across the music program and the graduate education program;

and interfaces with area schools and teachers

  • Maintains a record of scholarly and creative activity
  • Organizes recruitment activities and builds relationships in the surrounding public and private schools and communities to assist in outreach, advising, retention, and alumni relations
  • Participates in curriculum review and assessment.

Other Duties :

  • Collaborate with faculty and community stakeholders for program improvement
  • Work closely with other university, college, and division faculty and professionals
  • Work collaboratively with division colleagues on initiatives and co-curricular- and service-learning opportunities for the fine arts and humanities
  • Participate in program governance at the college- and university level as well as contribute to one’s professional organizations

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Graduate degree in music education or related field with preference given to doctorate (D.M.A, Ph.D., or Ed.D.)
  • Ability to teach at all levels in the applied woodwind instrumental area
  • Expertise in teaching, conducting, and developing instrumental ensembles
  • Three or more years successful experience teaching music in P-12 public schools
  • Additional college or university teaching experience
  • Familiarity with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) standards
  • Experience in the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accreditation process
  • Accomplished and versatile performer
