Project Engineer – Traffic and Noise Modeling

What We're Looking For

This opportunity is for an experienced traffic and noise modeler to join our Transportation Planning Group. This position is based in Kansas City and the candidate may choose to locate in our Overland Park or downtown Kansas City offices.

Preferred candidates will have a degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or a related field. This role supports traffic and transportation planning projects across a wide range of applications, from intersections to multi-state corridors.

Candidates will have experience with traffic operations analysis using Highway Capacity Manual methodologies; traffic modeling software such as VISSIM, Synchro / SimTraffic, HCS;

and noise modeling software such as the FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM), Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary to support all aspects of project development and delivery.

Primary responsibility will be task management of traffic and noise modeling work across various projects with a path to Project Management.

This position consults with the project manager to perform research, development, calculations, design, and delivery. Applies engineering techniques, procedures, and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity.

Leverages technical knowledge and experience to address design-related issues or concerns, working closely with the project manager through creative problem-solving, interactions with clients, and completing tasks to meet the project schedule.

Responsible for mentoring, training, and reviewing the work of junior engineer staff and provide constructive feedback. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

What You'll Do :

Responsible for the planning and distribution of discipline-specific work, and adherence to the schedule and budget on projects.

Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

Assists with the development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and / or assignments within discipline.

Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work within the technical discipline. Guides and mentors team to overall project objectives.

Coordinates technical aspects of project with client counterpart and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline.

Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.

Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need :

Master’s degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience, or

PhD in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience

Understands the impacts of decisions on technical design and work planning.

Coordinates work planning and design effectively across multiple technical disciplines.

Prepares high quality deliverables that are on time, and within budget and scope.

Primary Focus :

Task Management of traffic and transportation planning projects including development of scope, budget, schedule, and technical requirements.

Perform traffic and noise modeling across a wide variety of projects utilizing software such as VISSIM, Synchro / SimTraffic, HCS, and TNM

Application of "Big Data" in Transportation Planning including the use of platforms such as StreetLight, Replica, NPMRDS, INRIX, and HERE

Ability to mentor and train junior staff

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preparation of supporting documentation such as memorandums and technical reports.

Coordination with Local, State, and Federal Agencies

What We Prefer :

Professional Engineer (PE) certification

American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification (depending on discipline)
