GENERAL PURPOSE : Under general direction of Public Works, the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the City's CDL training program, facilitating CDL operator training and safety-related driving activities, including but not limited to conducting on-going CDL training, educating drivers on Department of Transportation (DOT) safety compliance, and implementing effective and safe training techniques for Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT).
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Coordinate all aspects of CDL training program activities including road test preparation classes and road test assessments;
- prepare and deliver instructional activities that cover driver qualification requirements; conduct safe driving and safe working methods and procedures training programs as specifically required;
and instruct, monitor, and evaluate trainees in the safe operation of equipment.
Prepare and document training and training certificates in accordance with CFR 380.503; maintain accurate and complete records of trainee's progress and development;
and maintain accurate files, records and documentation related to driver training and test results for inspection by FMCSA representatives.
- Prepare and deliver classroom and behind the wheel driving courses for class activities in accordance with ELDT regulations.
- Observe, evaluate, and document trainee's performance and development through course completion tracking and by providing consistent feedback to both trainee and supervisor;
partner with trainee's supervisor and Human Resources, as applicable, to proactively address development concerns; and adhere to reporting requirements for all incidents (accidents) involving CDL equipment or workplace injuries to trainee's supervisor.
- Maintain regulatory compliance documentation to promote safety and ensure FMCSA, DOT & ELDT compliance.
- Remain well-informed of new professional developments and opportunities for CDL training and stay up to date on current regulations regarding FMCSA, DOT, ELDT compliance;
recommend process and procedural improvements and ensure the test sites meet Federal and State standards.
- Oversee additional Safety Driving (i.e., Smith Certification), coordination of reporting requirements for CDL (annual) and checks, and motor vehicle record check process.
- Hours : M-F; 8AM-5PM. Some weekends and holidays may be required.
- Regular and timely attendance is required.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience :
Bachelor's degree and two (2) years' experience driving a CMV requiring a Class A CDL; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications :
Must possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record and a valid class A CDL with all endorsements necessary to operate a CMV for which training is to be provided and have a least two (2) years of experience driving a CMV requiring a CDL of the same class and / or the same endorsement;
and meet all applicable State qualification requirements for CMV instructors.
- Must have 10-speed endorsement with a minimum of two (2) years of experience.
- Smith Driving Instructor Certification preferred.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.

- General office equipment and standard computer software; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)

Physical Demands / Work Environment :
- Work is performed in a standard office environment.
- Subject to sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds.
