Along with the Co-Directors of College Counseling, the Associate Director of College Counseling guides a cohort of 11th and 12th graders through all aspects of their post-secondary search, application, and decision-making processes.

College Counseling

Support the college search, application, and selection process for Gann students through a range of individual, family, and group engagements;

assist students considering other post-secondary options, including gap years and military service.

  • Manage a caseload of juniors and seniors, typically 20-30 students / families from each class.
  • Facilitate and lead evening and in-school college counseling programs for students and families.
  • Write thoughtful and detailed recommendation letters.
  • Be responsive to student and parent questions and concerns throughout the application process.
  • Advise students and consult advisors on course selection.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with college admissions staff; host college admissions representatives, and provide students the opportunity to connect with them;

communicate with college representatives to discuss student applicants.

  • Attend regional and national conferences to stay abreast of current trends and new programs.
  • Travel to colleges, visit gap year programs, and participate in webinars to learn more about various offerings and build relationships;

share knowledge with Gann students and families.

For professional community and lay leadership

  • Work closely and collaboratively with faculty regarding recommendation letters.
  • Counsel advisors and coaches on how to support students through the college selection process.
  • Participate in school-wide professional development.

Additional responsibilities

Attend, engage in, and support other school functions as designated by the school, including serving as an advisor, supporting student clubs, attending special in-school programming, supervising retreats, field trips, and / or overnight events, and / or other responsibilities.

This is a 10-month, in-person position.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Three to five years of experience in college counseling or college admissions.
  • Ability to organize tasks, set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Sound judgment and independent problem-solving skills.
  • Anticipation of and responsiveness to student and parent concerns.
  • Expert written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to manage relationships, navigate conflict, and foster a positive work environment.
  • A positive outlook and a sense of humor.
  • Interest in working hard and joining an incredibly hard-working team.
  • Standardized testing administration experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of college counseling software (Scoir or similar platforms) is preferred.
  • Experience working with families unfamiliar with the U.S. college application process preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must be proficient in English to carry out work as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands include dexterity in operating office machines and supplies, including, but not limited to, computers, telephones, electronic calculators, copy machines, facsimile machines, and printers.

Stooping, bending, reaching for files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods are common.
