General Summary
The Field Service Technician reads, installs, and replaces small residential and commercial water meters and their reading devices and responds to billing questions.
The technician also disconnects and subsequently reconnects water / sewer services of delinquent customers. Essential Functions
- Troubleshoots and repairs electronic metering systems
- Inspects customer property, including plumbing fixtures for leaks or meter defects, and reports findings to customers and to appropriate Customer Relations staff
- Inspects job site to ensure that conditions are in compliance with WSSC Water standards for meter installation
- Disconnects and subsequently reconnects water / sewer services of delinquent customers
- Installs simple and advanced automatic metering systems
- Installs wiring for meter reading systems
- Installs, replaces, and performs preventive maintenance on residential and commercial water meters, and remote reading devices
- Investigates meter readings out of tolerance
- Locates and performs jobs on appointment schedule
- Maintains accurate records of repairs and completes work tickets and reports
- Performs emergency meter repairs
- Performs small meter turn-ons and turn-offs for non-payment and / or customer requests, and may collect payments
- Records daily work activities and prepares periodic reports
- Repairs and replaces malfunctioning, leaky, noisy water meters
- Requisitions supplies and consistently maintains inventory of meters and spare parts on vehicles
- Satisfies on-the-spot customer inquiries regarding billing procedures and consumption problems
- Takes measurements and sketches location of meters and curb boxes
- Uses a wide variety of hand tools (some powered) in cramped and often adverse conditions
- Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business
Other Functions
- May read meters as required
- May test equipment to troubleshoot small meters
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Environment And Physical Demands Work is performed in an outdoor environment Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Good knowledge of various small water meter components, meter operation principles, procedures for assembly and installation of outside and inside meters with and without remote systems, and plumbing code regulations
- Good knowledge of geographical areas of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties
- Skill in the use of common hand and power tools and equipment
- Ability to perform moderately to heavy physical exertion under adverse weather conditions, terrain and underground vaults
- Ability to resolve mechanical meter problems
- Ability to exercise good interpersonal communications skills
- Good mechanical skills
- Ability to complete first aid training
- Ability to operate and understand electrical circuit testers
- Ability to operate a computer terminal and understand its functions
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to write in a legible manner when preparing work tickets
- Ability to work effectively with Commission employees and the public
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1+ years of meter reading experience in a related industry
Additional Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date
- Working hours include evenings and weekends
- Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work
