The Special Education Director is an integral part of Walden's Educational Support team. The director will report to the Executive Leadership Directors.

A full-time director will work 226 days a year. A part-time director will work proportionately less.
Role :
- Direct the school’s special education program to ensure provision of needed services for students with special needs under the supervision of school executive program directors.
- Work to provide individualized education plans to meet the needs of all qualifying students.
- Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local requirements.
- Oversee the effectiveness of special education teachers and paraprofessionals.
Qualifications :
- Relevant Education / Certification
- Master’s degree
- Experience working in Special Education
Special Knowledge / Skills :
- Knowledge of federal and state special education law
- Understanding of the individual needs of special needs students
- Ability to communicate with all levels of special needs students, their parents, and teachers
- Ability to implement policy and procedures
- Ability to interpret data
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
- Ability to support school mission and objectives
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience :
Teaching experience in special education.
Major Responsibilities and Duties :
- Direct and manage special education program and services to meet students’ needs.
- Ensure that student progress is evaluated on a systematic basis, and that the findings are used to make the special education program more effective.
- Plan the necessary time, resources, and materials to support special education staff in accomplishing educational goals.
- Communicate regularly with directors regarding the special education program needs and effectiveness.
- Manage the special education referral process.
- Arrange for student assessments, make recommendations regarding placement and program management for individual students.
- Participate in committee meetings to ensure the appropriate placement and development of individual education plans for students.
- Supervise transition services for special education entering and exiting public school programs.
- Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge special education program effectiveness.
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning vital special education issues.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
