TITLE : Lead Viola Teaching Artist

DEPARTMENT : Heart of LAs Intergenerational Orchestra

REPORTS TO : Heart of LAs IO Artistic Director and Program Manager

SALARY : $45 per hour

FLSA : Non-exempt

HOURS : Up to 4 hours per week, for 44 weeks / year. On occasion, up to 5 hours per week. Hours are subject to change with academic calendar and / or program needs.

Rehearsals will be 1.5-2 hours per week.

THE HEART OF LOS ANGELES INTERGENERATIONAL ORCHESTRA

The Heart of Los Angeles Intergenerational Orchestra (Heart of LA IO) will bring together musicians from teens to adults of any age together in a multicultural environment that is representative of our great city, once per week.

Designed to share the joy of music making with performers and community members alike, musicians will benefit from interactions with each other while progressing toward a common goal of artistic excellence across a diverse musical repertoire.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Viola Teaching Artist, reporting to the Heart of LA IO Program Manager & Heart of LA IO Artistic Director, is responsible for viola instruction for the orchestra.

The Teaching Artist will ensure the highest quality learning experience for IO musicians; create curriculum, pedagogy, and lesson plans in collaboration with other IO music faculty;

and support each member holistically. The Teaching Artist will support Heart of LA's values and community and will help facilitate community building.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Heart of LA IO faculty member, responsibilities include (but are not limited to) :

  • Collaborating with Heart of LAs IO Artistic Director and Program Manager to create a wonderful environment for advancement and experiencing the joy of music-making together as a community
  • Instructing and leading sectionals for intermediate to highly advanced musicians of all ages
  • Assisting with full orchestra rehearsals and playing in the section
  • Communicating with IO musicians to understand each participant holistically
  • Preparation, communication, and collaboration with other Teaching Artists, Heart of LA IO Artistic Director, Orchestra Manager, and Heart of LA's IO staff
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)

  • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience a plus
  • Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher / performer
  • Strong knowledge of standard music pedagogy (Suzuki, etc.) with certification preferred
  • Experience teaching beginning lower strings (preferably in cello or bass)
  • Experience leading and conducting ensembles
  • Strong knowledge of string repertoire, curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Experience working with adults from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
  • Must pass CA Background Check

Heart of Los Angeles requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law.

New hires working at Heart of Los Angeles must be fully vaccinated no later than 60 days after hire and submit to additional masking and social distancing requirements.
