Position Summary / Purpose of Position : The collections and services of the University of Maryland Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) are at the heart of the research and teaching mission of the university.

Collection strengths include labor history, Maryland history and culture, modern Japanese history, mass media and culture, history of the book, women’s history, historic preservation, American and British writers and poets, and the history of the University.

Collection highlights include the National Public Broadcasting Archives, the Library of American Broadcasting, the George Meany Memorial AFL-CIO Archive, the Gordon W.

Prange Collection, and the Katherine Anne Porter Collection. The University of Maryland Libraries is also home to important special collections in the performing arts, including the International Piano Archives at Maryland.

The SCUA staff is committed to reaching out to the research community at large, facilitating access to these world-class collections that document key aspects of the human experience at the university, local, state, national and international levels.

The Outreach and Engagement Librarian in Special Collections is responsible for unlocking the richness of these collections by leading SCUA in programs that promote scholarship, support teaching and learning activities, and attract new audiences to the value of special collections.

SCUA has a long and successful history of gallery exhibitions and online exhibits that support engagement in the collections.

The person in this position works collaboratively with SCUA’s collection curators and others both in and outside the UMD Libraries in overseeing the full scope of exhibition planning and delivery.

In addition, this position leads SCUA’s public programming activities, which includes public events, conferences and symposia, tours, instructional programs, and online outreach via social media.

In collaboration with the UMD Libraries Division of Digital Services and Technologies (DST), this position oversees SCUA’s web presence to facilitate the delivery of online information tailored to SCUA’s unique needs.

The Outreach and Engagement Librarian in Special Collections has the critical responsibility of coordinating and collaborating across various units both within SCUA and across the Libraries.

This position also serves as SCUA’s principal point of contact with potential stakeholders in the University and beyond.

The successful candidate for this position will :

  • Lead SCUA in articulating a vision and identifying strategic priorities for outreach and engagement in close consultation with the Director and collection curators.
  • Demonstrate creativity in reimagining how SCUA can position its collections in the rapidly changing environment of a 21st century research university.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of trends in technologies and public programming that facilitate goals for outreach and engagement.
  • Understand the fundamental nature of special collections as unique resources with knowledge of the systems used to manage collections through various archival processes and descriptive tools.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage and allocate resources including budgeting and supervision of staff and student employees.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within the Libraries with stakeholders that intersect with engagement and outreach programs.
  • Demonstrate leadership in working with external partners both on and off campus.
  • Understand the fundamentals of donor relations, fundraising, grants, and external partnerships.

Master’s degree in Library and / or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or a non-USA equivalent; or a graduate degree in museum studies, history, American Studies, or other relevant discipline, with experience in archives, archival course work, or an archival certificate.

Experience :

At least two years of professional experience in an archival setting or in a cultural heritage institution. Early career professionals are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Thorough knowledge of professional museum standards and practices and relevant web applications as they apply to archival theory and practice.
  • Able to work effectively with others in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills and in assisting researchers in a special collections setting.
  • Able to manage a broad variety of tasks in response to varying time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints.
  • Possess a strong service orientation and the potential for professional contributions.

Preferences : Preferences :

  • Advanced degree / graduate study in museum studies, history, American Studies or other relevant discipline.
  • Work experience with exhibits and web design in an academic special collections setting.
  • Supervisory and project management experience are desirable.

Additional Certifications : This position is appointed to Library Faculty Ranks as established by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

  • Rank at appointment is based on the successful applicant’s experience and relevant credentials. Library Faculty at the University of Maryland must demonstrate accomplishments and / or evidence of potential for future accomplishments in three areas : 1) librarianship, which includes the assigned area(s) of responsibility and professional development;
  • 2) service, which includes participation in library, university, local, and national committees and professional organizations beyond the assigned area(s) of responsibility;

and 3) research, scholarship, and / or creative activities, which includes self-directed inquiry and results dissemination to advance the state of the profession.

Library faculty who are successful in meeting these criteria are awarded continuous employment in the form of Permanent Status.
