Position Description - Temporary / Casual

The Department of Soil, Water and Climate hires seasonal employees annually to advance research and education in our program.

These positions are either temporary or casual in nature (see definition below). All of the positions hired are hourly, with schedules set by a supervisor which may vary.

applicants will be qualified for these opportunities as they are received and reviewed. Some restrictions do apply.

Salary : Minimum hourly pay $15.00 / hour

Eligibility and Restrictions :

  • Students not enrolled in any of the UMN system campuses
  • Not currently employed by the University of Minnesota.
  • Employees in these positions perform a wide variety of non-academic and / or academic work responsibilities on a temporary or casual work schedule.
  • Minnesota Statute limits the eligibility, number of hours and / or days worked in this job classification.
  • The definition of temporary : Employees are limited to 67 or fewer days of work in a calendar year.
  • 100 day temporary : Students who are not enrolled at any of the University of Minnesota system campuses but are full-time students from a nonprofit or public institution prior to being hired and intend to continue as a student during or after the temporary employment;

under age 22; and the appointment does not exceed 100 workdays in a calendar year.

The definition of casual : Employees can work 14 or fewer hours each week and are not limited to 67 days of work in a calendar year.

Exact job duties will be shared during the interview and hiring process by the supervisor of the position. Common duties in seasonal positions include :

1. Assist assigned faculty member(s) with research project(s).

2. Research, collect, analyze, and / or code data.

3. Compile and / or create reports.

4. Assist with plot layout and maintenance.

5. Fertilization, planting and sampling.

6. Preparation of plant and soil samples for laboratory analysis.

7. Assist with data collection and data entry.

8. Design and / or conduct experiments, surveys, etc.

9. Conduct interviews with study participants.

10. Assist with evaluation and recording of results.

11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

High school graduate or equivalent. Educational, certification and work experience requirements are based on and cannot exceed the qualifications for work performed in comparable UM job classifications.
