Requirements
Hoya Kids Learning Center (HKLC) was established to meet the needs of the children of University faculty, staff, and students, and to help Georgetown University parents better balance work and family responsibilities.
The Learning Center is a key component of the University's commitment to weave family needs into the fabric of the University community and its educational mission.
- The Assistant Teacher implements program activities under the direct supervision of Lead Teacher(s) or Classroom Assistant Teacher(s) and assists in providing developmentally appropriate care and early education to children of Staff, Faculty, and Students of the University by : Creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children;
- Supporting the Center staffing requirements (staff to child ratios) by covering the duties of an Assistant Teacher when a core teaching staff member (teaching staff assigned full time to a particular classroom) is absent from the classroom;
Conducting programs and activities that implement the emergent curriculum of the classroom; And developing and maintaining mutually supportive relationships with individual parents that enable both parents and teaching staff to meet each child's individual needs.
Reporting to the Director of Hoya Kids Learning Center, additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
Child Care
- Demonstrate care and affection for each child, enforcing health and safety rules with children as well as aides and parents.
- Identify and take appropriate actions to eliminate unhealthy and unsafe conditions.
- Assist in classroom maintenance, toileting routines, serving snacks and meals, and maintenance of the Center's kitchens as needed.
- Adhere to statutory, regulatory, licensing, and accreditation requirements.
- In cooperation with Center staff, correct existing or potential deficiencies within the classroom or Center itself and follow up to ensure that deficiencies are corrected.
Curriculum
- Assist Teacher in Identifying, researching, and expanding upon children's interests and developmental needs.
- Prepare materials, supplies, and arrange classroom for planned activities.
- Assist in creating lesson plans / webs for each classroom.
- Maintain written records (webs and documentation panels) of the classroom activities and curriculum
Parent Relations
- Create relationships with families from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds to encourage 2-way communication.
- Provide verbal and written communication concerning each child's daily activities and development.
- Notify Teacher of behaviors, incidents, progress, and problems.
- Communicate concerning behaviors, incidents, progress, and problems as appropriate, ensuring more sensitive issues are reported by the Teacher.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences biannually and as needed or requested, responding to parents' requests for information about their child / ren.
Child Development :
- Challenge each child to develop to his or her potential, proficiently using our online assessment system, Teaching Strategies GOLD.
- Assist Teacher in maintaining written and visual records and portfolios on each child's development and interests, including (but not limited to) taking photographs and videos, downloading documentation, preserving and organizing art, organizing photos and videos saved to the shared drives, and keeping notes on each child.
- Assist Teacher in writing developmental reports (Family Conference Forms) in preparation for biannual parent-teacher conferences.
- Participate in biannual parent-teacher conferences as requested as well as in communications with other early childhood professionals such as specialists, therapists, and consultants as appropriate.
Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma and a Child Development Credential (by December )
- Experience working with young children
- First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of employment
- Computer experience that includes email and basic word processing
- Ability to positively interact with staff families and children of Hoya Kids and with GU students
- Ability to work well in a team, as well as independently
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully to children, families and colleagues
- Ability to show eagerness, flexibility and open mindedness
- Ability to positively interact with staff families and children of Hoya Kids and with GU students
Preferred qualifications
- College coursework in early childhood education, child development or a related field
- First Aid and CPR certification prior to employment
