Job Summary
Works with ground personnel in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe on line and grade.
Main Responsibilities :
- Embrace the Company’s safety culture, actively support all safety initiatives, and adhere to defined accountabilities implemented by the Safety Steering and Continuous Improvement teams
- Support, promote, and practice the Company core values, vision, and mission; follow code of ethics, workplace conduct, safety, and other established policies
- Safely operates a large excavator.
- Ensures trench is excavated to the accurate depth / grade with proper safety sloping or protection.
- Responsible for placement of water, storm & sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
- Ensures all work is conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
- Follows directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
- Ability to cut grade with minimal time spent on excavating to ensure production is on schedule.
- Knowledge of changes in soil conditions and materials that impact operations.
- Conducts trench work so that it meets OH&S requirements.
- Knowledge of accurate rigging of pipe, utility access hole barrels, etc. and ensures safe work procedures are followed during lowering of materials into the excavation.
- Perform minor maintenance to excavation equipment, report problems or defects to mechanic for repair.
Education :
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Valid drivers’ license (ability to maintain a clean driving history required)
Skills :
- Two years plus of excavator operator for utility work
- Ability to work with others in a professional manner
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and problem-solve
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Physical Requirements :
- Wears and maintains personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Regularly required to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
- Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel
- Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear)
- Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Standing / working on feet for long periods, and walking across uneven terrain
- Regularly required to work from a seated position operating equipment for long periods
- Frequent exposure to loud noise
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration
- Regularly exposed to all outdoor weather conditions, dust, and airborne particles
- Regularly exposed to fuel, oil, and other chemicals
- Occasionally exposed to working from high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock
