Position Summary :

The Ballistics Quality Technician I is responsible for visual and dimensional inspection and performance testing of ammunition following control and test plans as well as testing to assist R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality on design for manufacturing and production issues.

This individual has basic knowledge of firearms, ammunition, components, assemblies, and product form, fit and function.

The Ballistics Quality Technician I works with internal Quality team members, R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, and Production, and interfaces, under supervision, with U.

S. and foreign government customers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Perform basic ammunition ballistics tests in accordance with control plans and work instructions based on Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturing Institute (SAAMI) or government test standards which may include chamber pressure and velocity, action time, dispersion, primer sensitivity, extraction, waterproofness, terminal ballistics, and function and casualty with supervision.

Supports First Article and Lot Acceptance Tests as assigned.

  • Follow the Red Tag process and notifies management clearly and completely of any nonconformities found.
  • Review Bills of Materials throughout production to ensure components are correct and lot numbering is effective.
  • Perform basic range inspections as assigned in accordance with written procedures.
  • May travel to locations as assigned to participate in tests, potentially in front of customers including U.S. and foreign government representatives.
  • Participate in 5S workplace organizational activities and maintain the area in good working order through sustainment activities.
  • Engages in Continuous Improvement projects / tasks.
  • Follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
  • Regular on-site attendance / punctuality is a necessary function of this position.
  • May be required to work in other functional areas and / or facilities depending on business needs.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education / Experience & Skills :

  • High School diploma or equivalent. No prior experience required.
  • Basic drawing / blueprint reading abilities.
  • Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite and training on fundamental data analysis techniques. Familiarity with Oracle EBS.
  • Must be able to pass range certification within the first year. Obtain and maintain an understanding of Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturing Institute (SAAMI) and government test standards.

Establish and maintain functional knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all quality inspection equipment used in the ammunition manufacturing process.

Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, suppliers, management, and fellow employees.

  • Able to seek out ways to assist others without being asked while completing assigned tasks on time, displaying a high degree of professionalism with a collaborative attitude.
  • Must be able to complete assigned tasks on time and alert leadership when obstacles prevent task completion within assigned schedule.
  • Communicate effectively to supervision regarding problems and corrective action.

Working Conditions :

  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping / squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and / or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
