Overview
Graduate Medical Education is a joint effort of ECU Health Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine. ECU Health Medical Center, the sponsoring institution for accreditation of the institution and physician training programs by the ACGME, is a greater than -bed safety net academic medical center and the flagship hospital for ECU Health, a system of hospitals and clinics whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the people of eastern North Carolina.
The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is a 40-year-old medical school with a strong primary care orientation.
The school was established in by the North Carolina legislature. BSOM’s mission is to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state.
The Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) provides oversight and direction for all graduate medical and dental education activities that take place at the ECU Health Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine and affiliated clinics and practices.
There are over 40 physician and dental residency training programs and fellowships and over trainees that fall under the auspices of the Office of GME.
Job Duties Duties for the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education at East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine include the following
Program Management and Designated Institutional Official for GME 60%
- Functions as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for GME and is responsible for the oversight and administration of the institution’s Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited and non-accredited programs and is also responsible for assuring compliance with ACGME Institutional Requirements.
- Implements and monitors compliance with policies that promote a positive work and educational environment for the resident physicians and fellows in physician training programs of ECU Health Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine.
The training programs supervised by this position encompass a combined total of over post-doctoral learners, in more than 30 different medical and dental specialties.
- As the DIO for the medical center, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education is appointed as the Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, with a vote.
- As delegated authority from the Executive Dean of Brody and the President of ECU Health Medical Center, the Associate Dean represents the institution to multiple national and local external organizations, including the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, and ECU Health Medical Center officials.
- Direct responsibility for both clinical and educational program compliance with policies and regulations that are complex and frequently changing.
- Ensure there are sufficient institutional resources for effective implementation and development of GME training programs, in compliance with program and institutional requirements.
- Assure all new resident physicians and fellows are appropriately oriented to the institution.
- Assist training programs with ongoing professional development of Program Directors, Fellowship Directors, faculty, and Program Coordinators as needed.
- Design and implement recruiting strategies to enhance all programs.
- Oversee planning for program expansion and growth.
Reporting and Effort 40%
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education is directly responsible to the Executive Dean of the Brody School of Medicine and the President of ECU Health Medical Center for the conduct of all residency and fellowship training programs at the medical center.
Contingent Upon availability of funds. Minimum Education / Experience MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution and conferred by the time of hire, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.
Five years of progressively responsible academic and administrative experience License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation Full, unencumbered license to practice medicine in North Carolina

- Credentialing with ECU Physicians Preferred Experience, Skills, Training / Education
- Understanding of Graduate Medical Education systems (university and medical center).
- Knowledge of medical education principles and resources.
- Leadership style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality and flexibility.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
