Position Summary :
This is supervisory and technical work in directing the operation of a high-pressure or complex low-pressure steam heating and ventilating plant, a large air conditioning and heat distribution system, or a power plant.
Employees in this class are responsible for planning, assigning, and supervising the operation, maintenance, and servicing of a heating, air conditioning, or power plant and the inspection of a low-pressure heating and ventilating plan.
Supervision is exercised over subordinate skilled and supervisory personnel. Work is performed with considerable independence under the technical and administrative direction of the Chief Stationary Engineer and is reviewed through periodic inspections, observation, conferences, and analysis of operating reports.
Essential Functions :
Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of subordinate supervisory and skilled personnel in the operation of a high-pressure or complex low-pressure heating and ventilating plant;
and may directly supervise the work when present or delegate shift responsibility to a technical assistant
- Supervises a program involving the lubrication and minor maintenance of a wide variety of equipment and machinery used in craft instructional programs and cafeterias
- Instruct firemen in the operation and maintenance of a heating and ventilating plant
- Inspects low-pressure heating and ventilating plants to determine operating condition and need for repair and tests boiler water
- Operates and maintains the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system in the administration building of the Board of Education;
- receives heat from an outside source and distributes it through the building; operates, maintains, and adjusts the air conditioning system;
makes adjustments and minor repairs to motor driven elevators; and trains stationary engineering personnel in the operation of the air conditioning system
Maintains and submits operating reports including fuel and electricity consumption, kilowatt hours generated and cost per hour, supplies used, heating costs, and personal service costs;
makes special studies and prepares reports as requested
- Determines needs for oil, coal, and supplies and prepares requisitions
- Inspects coal purchases for conformance to specifications; maintains permanent records of coal delivered; and instructs techniques to avoid smoke nuisance
- Performs related work as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
- Thorough knowledge of the methods and principles involved in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam heating and ventilating plats, a large heat distribution and air conditioning system, or a power plan
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in a heating and ventilating plant
- Considerable knowledge of the lubrication, adjustment, and minor repair requirements of a wide variety of equipment used in industrial and vocational crafts and in cafeterias
- Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate personnel in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure or complex low-pressure steam heating and ventilating or aid conditioning equipment
- Ability to detect flaws in equipment operation and to take necessary corrective measures
- Ability to observe safety precautions in carrying out assigned tasks and to instruct others in their observance
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Skilled in making adjustments and minor repairs to heating and ventilating or air conditioning equipment
Experience :
- Considerable experience in the operation of high-pressure or complex low-pressure steam heating and ventilating equipment or heat distribution and air conditioning equipment
- OR any equivalent combination of training and experience
Education :
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (required)
- Possession of a stationary engineer’s license as issued by the City of St. Louis
Physical Requirements :
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
- Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and / or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
- Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree
Working Conditions and Environment :
- Work is routinely performed in a typical interior / office environment
- Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
