Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno, KUNR is recruiting for a Journalist or Senior Journalist. The position reports to the KUNR managing editor.

A KUNR Journalist / Senior Journalist's primary functions are researching, conducting interviews, and creating original news stories across broadcast and digital platforms.

In addition to daily original stories, the incumbent is assigned to longer, in-depth reports as needed. The KUNR Journalist / Senior Journalists are responsible for ensuring proper online delivery of all original stories on the station website and via social networking and act as editors when needed by other journalists for peer review.

This KUNR position is grant-funded and specific to reporting on State Government topics.

In addition to the above duties, the KUNR Senior Journalist position is responsible for developing expertise on at least one beat.

The senior broadcast journalist will also serve as a mentor for other developing journalists and interns and as a fill-in editor in the absence of the newsroom's regular editor.

Duties include but are not limited to :

Produce regular professional news coverage, including daily news coverage and larger, in-depth features, for KUNR's audience across the web, social media, and broadcast platforms.

Write, edit, create, and post news content text, supporting visual assets, and audio to the station's digital platforms.

Report on issues that directly affect the community and show how laws and legislative decisions directly impact individuals’ every day lies.

Develop products outside regular news coverage such as newsletters, podcasts, events, or other multi-platform methods of connecting KUNR's journalism with the community.

Regular digital-first production, coverage, and stories, whether in text, video, or graphics format, may include working with the editor to translate stories to Spanish;

editing, producing, and hosting episodes of programs as needed; Assisting in producing live public policy forums; co-report and produce in-depth projects resulting in a multi-part series.

Required Qualifications

Journalist : High School Graduation and four years of related work experience; OR an Associate’s Degree and three years of related work experience;

OR a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of related work experience; OR a Master’s Degree and one year of related work experience.

Related Experience : Radio / TV / Print / Digital news reporting or related journalism experience

Senior Journalist : High School Graduation and five years of related work experience; OR an Associate’s Degree and four years of related work experience;

OR a Bachelor’s Degree and three years of related work experience; OR a Master’s Degree an two years of related work experience.

Related Experience : Radio / TV / Print / Digital news reporting or related journalism experience with subject matter expertise in a specific beat

  • Preferred Qualifications : Experience reporting on local or state government; Bilingual in Spanish Language ; Video skills / graphics experience ;
  • Experience with digital Content Management Systems (CMS) and social media publication ; Experience editing and producing audio stories ;

Experience taking and editing photos; Working with Photoshop

Certification or Licensure : Driver’s License

Schedule or Travel Requirements : Regular travel required and variable work schedule
