GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Academic Advisor, Special Programs will work within the office of Academic Affairs, in the area of policy and practice in Coursera to help make a success of this significant initiative at Illinois Tech.
They will be a programmatic advisor to students, faculty and staff to help with the implementation and success of the Coursera programs.
They will liaise with academic departments to assist in the process of matriculation into degree programs. As an Academic Affairs advisor, this position will assist with student needs serviced by the department of Academic Affairs, but will specialize in Coursera assistance, and will report to the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs, AMP and Joint Programs.
This position will become familiar with all academic policies stated in (but not limited to) the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs, Faculty Handbook and Student Handbook, as well as blanket substitutions for major and minor requirements from all major departments, and assist when needed, in the completion of daily work for the office for programs that are not formally part of Coursera.
Daily work includes academic audits, final degree checkout, academic policy exceptions, responding to petitions via email and Degree Works requests, as well as answering phone calls and office emails.
COMMUNICATIONS This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, and interaction with staff, students, faculty and other members of the university community.
CUSTOMER SERVICE Will provide customer services to students, staff and faculty on a daily basis. Special Schedule Requirements Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree and higher education experience in a four year university is required.
Experience in academic advising strongly preferred. Knowledge & Skills Proficient with Microsoft Office. Experience with Ellucian Banner, Degree Works, EAB Navigate360 is strongly preferred.
SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY No direct role in supervision or budget matters, but will direct some duties of student workers.

N / A Key Responsibilities Key Responsibility Provides academic degree services for all students admitted into Coursera programs.
Will assist academic departments, program directors and advisors (both faculty and staff assigned to advising) in making informed choices concerning the implementation of Coursera.
Will liaise and support admissions marketing of the Coursera program. Will be or will become very familiar with all majors and their requirements, including specializations, department substitutions, core curriculum (when applicable) and requirements.
Providing accurate and timely audits will be beneficial to students and faculty, and will ensure students are on track for their anticipated graduation date.
Assist with other office daily work, including but not limited to degree auditing and final checkout, student and faculty petitions and academic policy exceptions.
This also includes evaluation and application of transfer credit. Percentage Of Time 55 Key Responsibility Assist with university advising and retention efforts.
Review academic and registration issues preventing registration or degree completion and offer solutions to students and faculty advisors concentrating on, but not exclusively for, students in Coursera.
Serve as the primary contact for Academic Standing and Matriculation Review of Coursera students as they enter full degree seeking status.
Serve on the Undergraduate and Graduate Studies Committees as a non-voting member to provide interpretation of academic policies and regulations.
Assist with editing of the bulletin so that academic policies are explained accurately. Percentage Of Time 25 Key Responsibility Assists students, faculty, staff and others with questions or concerns via phone, email, online chat, and in person, and answers student petitions on Degree Works and via email.
Student petitions include but are not limited to shared course approvals, course repeat requests, substitutions, and more.
