Controls Engineer
Job Summary
Controls Engineers perform data center systems maintenance and support. Participates on internal and external project teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures within a diverse scope.
On call on a rotating basis.
Responsibilities
Technical Expertise
- Understanding of typical data center electrical, fire protection, and HVAC system operation including typical optimization strategies and typical deficiencies.
- Ability to read or write Electrical Schematics in AutoCAD, or similar
- Ability to design or debug electrical panels with components of mixed voltages
- Ability to debug 24VDC circuits. Knowledge of automation components, common failure points, and ability to perform troubleshooting with a multimeter
- Knowledge of Data Center design and components. CRAHs, Chillers, Valve Actuators, etc.
- Controls system knowledge, PID Tuning, SOO, controls schematics.
- HMI and PLC programming
System Operation and Work Practices
- Operating knowledge of control systems to include diagnostics and repairs
- Ability to apply knowledge of Equinix process and procedure and industry standards to resolve diverse issues
- Uses safe working practices (e.g. can apply procedure for lockout / tag out, familiar with MSDS, etc.)
Problem Solving
- Solves diverse, cross-functional issues requiring action and initiative to resolve
- Implements and makes recommendations for system level improvements to eliminate potential problems
- Tests suitability of components for deployments
Internal / External Contact
- Participates in projects or initiatives including General Contractors, design teams, commissioning agents, equipment suppliers, etc.
- Multi-functional SOP development and relevant technical writing
- Interactions are primarily to exchange information between departments within the organization
- May include executive level communications in standardized templates
Develop Policy / Methods
Participates in review of policy and procedure documents
Assess Adherence to Policy
Assures consistency to developed standards and policy through review of documentation, participation in data center commissioning activities
Qualifications
- 5+ years professional controls engineering diagnostic, repair and design experience to include HMI programming, Windows network level authentication, and PID tuning
- Preference for environmental / HVAC systems experience
- Preference for critical facilities, especially data center, experience
- Preference for BSEE degree
