Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.

Position Summary

This research technician for a genetics / molecular biology lab; to independently conduct experiments as defined in the research plan and to serve on a research team working on chromatin structure and function in the model fungus N.

crassa and on a second project to develop anti-fungal drugs.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies

  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Superior organizational and time management skills.
  • Highly competent in molecular biological and / or biochemical methods; skills with nucleic acids and proteins desirable.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaborations with others at different universities, and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Editorial skills for preparation of reports.
  • Although not routine, willingness as needed to work with / be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and / or hazardous chemicals is important.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and presentation, and on-line literature search engines.

Physical Demands

  • Lift, climb, squat, and kneel, stand / sit for long periods.
  • Work with animals.
  • Wear personal protective equipment and use enhanced biosafety techniques.
  • Efficient in both verbal and written communication in English.

Research / Experiments :

  • Maintains records of strain collections and durable long-term reagents such as antisera.
  • Independently sets up and monitors experiments in progress.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental design; methods, procedures, and techniques;

or equipment and facilities.

  • As necessary, develops and / or implements new or modified research methods, procedures, and techniques to meet the unique requirements of assigned research problems.
  • Other duties as assigned

Lab Duties :

  • Prepares the schedule for lab community chores by students, staff, and postdocs for completion.
  • Schedules and monitors utilization of laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitors equipment and instrument performance; obtains necessary maintenance and repair.
  • Coordinates ordering and maintains stock of laboratory supplies.
  • May provide technical direction to new lab members and student workers.
  • Monitors work in progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards.
  • Instructs others in routine laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as needed

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation.
  • Performs literature searches to develop information of relevance to the research.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as sequences, graphs, charts, etc.
  • Participates in the preparation of reports and presentation of the research findings.
