Job Description
JOB SUMMARY : The Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day operations of Nimrod International Journal. The Managing Editor works with the Editor in Chief in the development and delivery of all editorial content.
- Other duties include but are not limited to creating and managing publication schedules; overseeing publication standards, which may include copy editing, and proofreading);
- managing the budget, paying vendors, and realizing the business aspects of printing and mailing issues; administering submissions and facilitating the review process;
- coordinating volunteers; supervising graduate students, interns, and volunteers; maintaining subscriber and other lists;
- organizing events or programming in support of the journal; attending events or representing the journal on behalf of the university and editor in chief;
and other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (RESPONSIBILITIES) :
- Manages all business operations for Nimrod International Journal
- Manages the budget
- Sources, communicates with, and pays vendors for printing, mailing, and other publishing business logistics
- Creates and manages content and publication schedules (in concert with the faculty editors)
- Administers the submissions process, communicating with authors, prospective authors, and peer reviewers
- Hires, trains, and supervises graduate students as well as other interns and volunteers
- Maintains publication style guides and standards, which may include copy editing and proofreading
- Maintains subscriber and other lists
- Organizes events or programming in support of the journal
- Attends as needed events or conferences representing the journal and editor in chief
- Implements best practices, workflows, tools and templates to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the publishing process
- Performs related responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge / Skill / Ability
- Ability to multi-task efficiently and drive projects to completion.
- Expertise with Microsoft Office Applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Demonstrated practice of establishing effective priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, volunteers, faculty, and authors.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn and use Adobe InDesign.
Required Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Bachelor’s degree in English or related field, or equivalent academic and work experience
- Ability to multi-task, work independently with initiative, discretion, and confidentiality
- Proficiency with standard office work applications
Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Previous experience working with any literary journal
- Experience with management and budgeting for a partially independent entity within a larger university or non-profit organization
Physical Demands Typing / Keyboarding : Proficiency in typing and using a computer keyboard for extended periods. Speaking : Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Reaching : Ability to reach for items on shelves or in cabinets. Manual Dexterity : Ability to use hands and fingers to operate office equipment, handle files, and perform other tasks.
