Job Summary : The Genetic Counselor will be responsible for providing support services for Advanced Medical Genetics. They will provide genetic counseling and support for adult, pediatric, cardiac, cancer, and metabolic patients.
They will assess and analyze data to provide individuals and family members risk factors for specific disorders, syndromes and procedures.
The genetic counselor will provide patients with education, treatment plans and reassurance regarding genetic and inherited risks as well as facilitate and interpret all testing and results.
They will facilitate and collaborate between the multi-disciplinary health care teams to counsel patients on all associated risks, benefits and limitations of testing.
Responsibilities :
- Obtain medical and family histories.
- Discuss with the patient testing options available, facilitate decision making and provide informed consent for genetic testing.
- Interpret genetic testing results and report results to patient in a timely manner.
- Communicate how inherited diseases and conditions may affect the patient and their families.
- Provide supportive counseling to patients after results are received.
- Coordinate patient follow up.
- Provide genetic counseling service for families for whom molecular methods of diagnosis can offer carrier detection.
- Develop and provide educational services to health professionals and community groups..
- Provide educational opportunities for various learner types affiliated with an academic institution.
- Develop educational materials regarding genetic disease for health professionals and the lay public.
- Respects patients by recognizing their rights; maintaining confidentiality.
- Work with physician at satellite locations
- Utilizes technology, including specialized software as applicable, to maximize productivity..
- Develops and maintains electronic files as necessary.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills; provides customer service; assists other support staff as necessary; collaborates with all levels of internal leadership, management, and staff as well as outside clients, vendors, and other external parties.
- Other duties as assigned by providers, directors and administration.
Qualifications / Requirements :
Experience : Minimum of 1 year practice related genetic counseling experience, required.
Education : Masters Degree in Medical Genetics Genetic Counseling, required.
Licenses / Certifications : Must be board certified in ABMG or ABGC certification within 6-12 months of hire, required.
