Job Description

The First-Generation Student Center at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a part-time Letter of Appointment (LOA) position, teaching a three-credit Research Proposal Writing Course for our McNair Scholars students ( ).

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program funded at 151 institutions across the United States which is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.

McNair participants are degree-seeking US citizens or permanent residents who are either a low-income individual who is a first-generation college student or a member of a group that is underrepresented in graduate education.

The main goal of the Proposal Writing course is for students to write and submit a Nevada Undergraduate Research Award (NURA) proposal to be conducted under the guidance of a faculty research mentor through the Summer and Fall semesters.

Students may come from any major; therefore, most of the content related to data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation will come through revisions to student proposals with the LOA instructor and their faculty research mentor.

Some curriculum and a syllabus will be provided as a foundation for the course with adjustments to be made at the instructor’s discretion.

A successful candidate will be able to teach at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum as students in the course will range from sophomores through seniors.

Responsibilities

Course Objectives include :

Developing a research mindset

Navigating literature databases

Designing a research project to test a hypothesis that could address gaps found in the literature

Understanding how to analyze and interpret research data

Learning best practices for effective oral, audiovisual, and written research storytelling and communication

Lectures and assignments should :

Walk students through crafting proposals

Create a literature review and citation management

Research integrity and experimental design

Research communication in written and visual form.

Required Qualifications

Candidate must have a Master’s degree

Candidate must have a history of teaching undergraduate students as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Research Assistant (RA) at either the Bachelor’s or Graduate level

Candidate must have a strong desire to work with diverse undergraduates to fulfill the McNair Scholars mission

Preferred Qualifications

Current PhD student or postdoc standing

The position will begin January 1, 2025 and continue through May 31, 2025.
