The University of Florida, Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure track position in medical anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The department seeks a theoretically and methodologically rigorous scholar who can integrate multiple perspectives on health and illness across disciplinary and sub-disciplinary boundaries.

We value applied approaches and community participatory research, and expect applicants to have an active program of empirical field research.

Regional expertise should complement existing department strengths, including a focus on the United States, Asia, or multi-sited comparative work.

Applicants should have a broad foundation in medical anthropology, contribute to the four field mission of the department, and be prepared to participate in the expansion of experiential learning opportunities at the undergraduate level, particularly through actively involving undergraduates in research.

The successful applicant will have an excellent record of externally funded research, peer reviewed publications reflective of an active research program, and demonstrated experience and enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.

The appointment begins on August 16, 2025; a Ph.D. in anthropology is required at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to :

  • Maintain an active research agenda.
  • Pursue external research funding.
  • Teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and / or graduate level.
  • Provide service to the department, the university, and the profession.

UF has a number of ongoing university-wide initiatives including the recent AI initiative, which includes a partnership with NVIDIA.

Other opportunities for collaboration and funding abound across the university, including with the Emerging Pathogens Institute, the College of Medicine, and the International Center, as well as the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere, to name a few.

UF is a research intensive (R1) university and the state’s oldest, largest, and most comprehensive land grant university with an enrollment of over 50,000 students and was ranked 7th best public university in the United States by US News and World Report 2025, and #1 public university by the Wall Street Journal in its 2024 Best Colleges in the U.

S. report. UF is located in Gainesville, a city of approximately 150,000 residents in North Central Florida, 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and 67 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, and within a 2-hour drive to large metropolitan areas (Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville).

The beautiful climate and extensive nearby parks and recreational areas afford year-round outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and nature photography.

UF’s large college sports programs, museums, and performing arts center support a range of activities and cultural events for residents to enjoy.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida is a vibrant and congenial unit consisting of all four subfields of anthropology with 31 core faculty members, over 300 undergraduate majors, and approximately 100 graduate students.

Our faculty are also affiliated with departments and centers across the university, including the Center for African Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies, the Department for Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, and the African American Studies Program.

The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the compensation includes a full benefits package.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in anthropology by August 15, 2025.

Preferred Qualifications :

Ability to teach a variety of courses, including introductory medical anthropology, methods courses, and other courses related to the candidate’s area of expertise.
