Job Summary

The Lead Research Finance Analyst (RFA) is independently responsible for post award administration for active Principal Investigators as well as supervision of all other RFAs in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics.

The Analyst will play a key role in implementing best practices within the Department for post award administration. This includes workflows for grants management operations and processes for obtaining financial approvals on PI projects.

The Analyst is responsible for the training and development of two RFAs on an ongoing basis and to facilitate the solving of complex portfolio problems for those on the post award team.

The Lead RFA will supervise support staff (currently consisting of one finance assistant) working on grants or contracts according to established policies, practices and defined internal controls.

They will receive pre-determined work that is subject to a moderate level of control and review and exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.

The Lead RFA will identify risks and respond accordingly. They will provide priority setting and work flow analysis and will also use advanced contracts and grants concepts to manage high volume and high complexity transactions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a lead / supervisor / manager
  • Thorough knowledge of contracts and grants transactions and applicable financial systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Ability to manage high volume and complex transactions
  • Ability to perform highly complex financial analysis and customized reporting
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles. Demonstrated advanced competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports
  • Proficiency in use of common desktop / web applications
  • Strong interpersonal skills, service orientation, ability to multi-task effectively in a varied, high volume environment, judgment and decision-making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to present complex finance-related information in a clear and concise manner, both in writing and verbally
  • Advanced computer skills including Intermediate-Advanced Excel to produce reports and integrated spreadsheets. Ability to use either Mac or PC
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of Federal Acquisition Regulation, Code of Federal Regulations, sponsor-specific policies, intellectual property policies, conflict of interest requirements, publication rights, application of indirect cost rates and other complex concepts in research administration
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply sponsor, institutional and departmental policies. Knowledge of current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration
  • Thorough knowledge of policy and its interpretations
  • Ability to screen applicants, interview candidates and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire
