Counter-ISRT Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)
Laurel, MD, United States
Full-time

Description

Do you have experience with novel, non-kinetic methods for creating an advantage in information warfare?

Would you like to apply your skills to the Department of Defense's most challenging technology development efforts facing our nation?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The A4H Applied Technologies and Threat Engineering Group develops non-kinetic defensive strategies by combining a detailed understanding of adversary threat systems with advanced technologies (such as lasers).

Our group is seeking a forward thinking, innovative non-kinetic systems engineer to propose and investigate multiple non-kinetic engagement strategies for defeating a wide range of potential threats to counter our adversary's Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Tracking (ISRT) capabilities.

In this position you will apply your expertise in multiple non-kinetic areas (directed energy, electronic warfare, etc.) to evaluate the operational utility of these methods through software and hardware prototyping, explore the fundamental physics of these methods, and understand their impact on the threat.

As a Counter-ISRT Engineer you will :

Design and develop new non-kinetic means for defending US forces by denying, degrading, and deceiving foreign ISRT systems.

Explore the full space from fundamental physics to tactical integration with end to end kill chains.

  • Explore the full range of non-kinetic engagements, to include lasers, high power microwave, electronic warfare, and other novel methods.
  • Create threat characterizations of advanced foreign systems to include sensors, communication networks, and battle management systems.
  • Interface with the intelligence community to ensure a strong working knowledge of available information on foreign system capabilities.
  • Work in conjunction with teams exploring non-kinetic integration with existing and future kill chains (sensors, combat systems, and other engagement methods) to ensure proposed methods have an operationally relevant employment concept.
  • Develop physics-based software simulations of both threat systems and blue system solutions at various levels of fidelity.
  • Provide your subject matter expertise to other teams exploring similar issues.
  • Participate in and contribute to a team environment that involves personnel with various academic backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Develop presentations and brief results of efforts to team members, management, and DoD sponsors.

Qualifications

You meet the minimum qualifications for this position if you have :

  • A Master's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent.

  • A willingness to work a significant portion of the time in a closed area.
  • An ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information.

Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have :

  • A PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
  • Experience with multiple of the following program languages : MATLAB, C, C++, or Python.
  • Experience in multiple non-kinetic technology areas such as lasers, RF systems, and electronic warfare.
  • Demonstrated testing experience, both laboratory and in the field.
  • Leadership experience leading small teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • An Active Top Secret / SCI Clearance.
