Job Title : Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Position Overview :
The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist will work directly with individuals who are blind or visually impaired to develop and enhance their travel skills and independence.
The ideal candidate will be experienced in designing personalized O&M training programs and will possess a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by our clients.
Key Responsibilities :
- Conduct thorough assessments of clients' mobility needs and develop individualized orientation and mobility training plans.
- Provide one-on-one instruction in various environments, including home, community, and work settings.
- Teach clients how to use mobility aids, such as canes and electronic travel aids, and enhance their spatial awareness and navigation skills.
- Collaborate with clients, their families, and other professionals to set goals and track progress.
- Develop and deliver workshops and training sessions on orientation and mobility topics.
- Stay current with best practices, emerging technologies, and trends in the field of orientation and mobility.
- Maintain accurate records of client progress and report on outcomes.
- Advocate for clients and support their integration into various community activities and environments.
Qualifications :
- Masters degree in Orientation and Mobility, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or a related field.
- Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential is required.
- Proven experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
- Strong knowledge of mobility techniques, assistive technologies, and adaptive strategies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience in developing and implementing community outreach programs.
- Familiarity with a range of mobility aids and adaptive technologies.
