The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist / Engineer 4 to join their team.

Overall, the lab conducts biomedical research that leads to novel HIV vaccine and therapeutic approaches through an increased understanding of immune responses against HIV and structural and functional aspects of the virus.

The main project for this position is a nonhuman primate vaccine study that will require interfacing with collaborators, coordination of logistics, obtaining approvals, and working with staff and vets at the primate center.

This project also involves an understanding of the HIV envelope and analyzing viral sequences and B cell receptor sequences with collaborators.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Hands on research including bench work and experimental design, etc. 40%

  • Molecular biology techniques
  • Flow cytometry
  • Protein analysis
  • DNA sequencing and analysis
  • Viral inhibition and neutralization assays
  • Cell culture
  • BSL2+ practices
  • 10X Genomics

Direction of collaborative research projects including nonhuman primate studies 25%

Includes such responsibilities as :

  • Regular communication and planning with the primate center
  • Regular communication with collaborators
  • Obtaining regulatory approvals (biosafety, IACUC, OAW, OHS, EHS)
  • Preparation and provision of reagents

Organization, planning, and logistics 15%

Includes :

  • Planning and direction of collaborative and nonhuman primate studies
  • Contributing to inventories and lab maintenance
  • Maintaining a lab notebook and online secure and organized records of all experiments
  • Organized secure data files
  • Completion of all trainings as required

Data analysis and interpretation 20%

Includes :

  • Compiling and analyzing data
  • Preparing figures for publications
  • Presentations
  • Grants
  • Writing abstracts
  • Publications
  • Reading relevant literature

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or Virology and four (4) years of relevant experience with pathogenic viruses such as HIV / SIV, experience with advanced molecular biology, advanced immunology, advanced tissue culture experience and experience working with BSL2+ procedures.

Equivalent education / experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license / certification / registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiarity with single cell sequencing
  • Advanced sequence analysis
  • Flow cytometry
  • Familiarity with studies involving nonhuman primates
  • Experience in the analysis of quantitative and sequence data
  • Experience in writing and demonstrated co-authorship of manuscripts and preparing scientific presentations

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High level of motivation
  • Interest in virology, immunology, and vaccines
  • The ability to work well and effectively with a variety of individuals and should possess a strong work ethic and desire to achieve results and advancement
  • This individual should also exhibit professionalism and leadership and serve as a resource for others
  • Familiarity with different types of sequence analysis, nonhuman primate studies, and NIH funded research are strongly preferred
