POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides interpretation for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families. This position acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients and families.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.
2. Interprets patient and / or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.
3. Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.
4. Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients / family, as it relates to medical care.
5. Acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between health care staff and patients and families. Confers with supervisor on any unusual situations.
Positions are facility based with no budgetary responsibility. Internal customers : All levels of nursing management and staff, medical staff, volunteers and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
External Customers : family members.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENT FACTORS
IP - Typical Indirect Patient Care Environment : (CSPD Instrument Technician, Lab Technician, Pharmacist)
Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and body fluids.
Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
May require periodic to frequent use of personal computer.
Off-site travel may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess a level of knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience.
Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation and a proficiency level typically achieved with 1 year of experience as an interpreter.
Requires an understanding of medical terminology. Effective 9 / 1 / 2019, all new hires or transfers into the role must pass a written and oral exam with a score of 75% or above.
Must demonstrate effective communication skills, problem solving, strong human relations skills, organizational and time management skills and flexibility in responding to multiple demands.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in communications or health care related field.
Completion of a medical interpreter skills training course including learning the code of ethics and standards of practice.
Additional related education and / or experience preferred.
