About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) :

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master the core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds.

Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision.

Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.

ISBVI is in the process of implementing a strategic plan to transition to a new, state-of-the-art campus.

Salary :

Salary is commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview :

The Braille Project Manager coordinates the administrative activities of the Braille Project. You will train and supervise Braille transcribers and contract personnel.

You will also provide technical assistance to teachers, paraprofessionals, and other instructional staff in producing Braille and tactile graphics.

This will include formatting and producing B raille instructional materials in Unified English Braille (UEB) and Nemeth Braille codes.

The Braille Project Manager reports to the Director of the Indiana Educational Resource Center.

A Day in the Life :

The essential duties of this role are :

  • Coordinate the administrative activities of the Braille Project :
  • Monitor daily operations, communicating with and coordinating production with the Indiana Educational Resource Center.
  • Establish and implement policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Maintain production levels to meet material request timelines.
  • Provide direct daily supervision and training.
  • Assist the director of the Miami Braille Project with braille technical assistance.
  • Manage on-site staff and assigned projects.
  • Schedule, assign, monitor, and review staff projects.
  • Format, transcribe, and produce Braille instructional materials including textbooks, workbooks, and other instructional materials utilizing publisher files, MS Word, macros, templates, scanning, printing, and other means according to national standards.
  • Proofread materials, produce tactile graphics, and utilize drawing software for embossing and labeling volumes produced.
  • Coordinate with the Miami Accessible Media Project director to fill American Printing House for the Blind (APH) Louis requests.
  • Provide technical assistance to Indiana's Miami Braille Project, teachers, paraprofessionals, and other instructional staff.
  • Advise callers regarding proper Braille formatting and transcription of instructional materials via e-mail, phone, mail correspondence, and Internet.
  • Track and implement the most current national initiatives and trends in Braille transcription and production.

What You'll Need for Success :

Credentials :

  • Must hold : NLS Unified English Braille Certification, NBA Format Certification, and have a willingness to acquire Nemeth Code Certification within five years.
  • Ability to read and write Braille with a minimum of five years experience of transcribing instructional content into Braille and tactile format following national standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Braille translation software and proficiency in the various methods of Braille transcription and production, including tactile graphics and technology hardware and software.

Additional skills and abilities :

  • Must possess knowledge of the instructional needs of students with visual impairments.
  • Advanced Word and Excel computer skills.
  • Two years of successful supervision of programs and people preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree or Licensure / certification in teaching children who are blind or have low vision preferred.
  • Minimum of five years experience working with students with visual impairments, preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports :

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
