Position Summary

The University of New Mexico's (UNM) Facilities Design & Construction (FDC) seeks a Professional Intern / Technical to join our vibrant, committed team of professionals who support the built environment at UNM.

FDC provides seamless delivery of professional support services to internal clients using best practices in capital project development, and construction.

The Professional Intern / Technical will be responsible for providing support to project staff on design and construction projects at the University.

This position provides critical administrative and project support to project management staff in fulfilling FDC's mission and provides excellent customer service to our clients.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the design and construction process and be able to balance multiple priorities in a focused manner and build positive relationships with department project managers, UNM stakeholders, and clients.

The professional internship is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience to recent college graduates within an applied engineering or other advanced technical field.

Engages in various work assignments, projects and activities of varying technical complexity, structured to enable the intern to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform at a professional level, typically identified with a targeted exempt position within the field of information technology, engineering, or other applied science.

Receives training and mentorship in planning and carrying out activities and assignments. This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.

This internship will help prepare for a professional position as Project Manager within the UNM department.

Duties of the Professional Intern / Technical position will include, but are not limited to :

  • Provide support to other project management personnel in the department in small project cost estimation, data collection and reporting, information recording in the department's Project Management Information System (PMIS), arrangement for hazardous material testing services, and general coordination on projects;
  • Assist on several capital projects concurrently, typically ranging in budget from $500 to $300,000, and occasionally budgets exceeding $300,000;
  • Coordinate or assist in the coordination of project implementation as a member of a project team, including internal stakeholders such as UNM IT and UNM Facilities Management, among others;
  • Apply professional knowledge of design and construction procedures, zoning and building codes, and building materials to project and construction management.
  • Review construction bid documents, project specifications, contractor submittals and requests for information (RFI), and Architect's Supplement Information (ASI) as requested by FDC staff.
  • Attend project and construction progress meetings, prepare meeting minutes, and compile coordination items for project management follow-through.
  • Prepare requests for qualifications (RFQs) and solicit external vendor proposals.

FDC is currently operating under a telecommuting (hybrid) work arrangement that is subject to change in support of our business needs.

Flexible work hours are possible , within certain parameters.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.

Minimum Qualifications

Related Bachelor's of Science degree; no previous experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of construction bid documents, project specifications, submittals and other construction documentation
  • Familiarity with the New Mexico Procurement code
  • Degree in Construction Management or other Engineering
