Position Information

New Hanover County Public Library is seeking a dedicated and customer-focused Bilingual (Spanish / English) Children’s Librarian to join our team at the Main Library in Wilmington, NC.

This position requires a passion for children's literature, early childhood development, and providing engaging library experiences for youth.

Essential Duties :

  • Develop and curate the Children’s Collection and maintain relevant displays.
  • Plan and present dynamic weekly storytimes emphasizing early literacy essentials.
  • Coordinate ongoing and special programs for children ages 0-12 aligned with the library’s strategic goals.
  • Conduct outreach to schools, afterschool programs, parent groups, and local organizations to promote library services.
  • Organize and facilitate field trips to the library.
  • Promote library resources through physical displays and online platforms.
  • Supervise staff and collaborate with the children’s services team systemwide.
  • Provide customer assistance at the children’s desk and other service points as needed.
  • Educate customers in the use of technological devices and library resources.
  • Ensure customer privacy and uphold American Library Association Bill of Rights and Code of Ethics

Work Schedule :

  • Varying day shifts Monday through Friday.
  • Two evenings per week and weekends on assigned rotation.
  • Availability during emergency situations and for programs / outreach events.

Salary Information :

The hiring range for this position is $53,668.00 - $72,451.00 annually plus a competitive benefits package. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Qualifications :

Master’s Degree in Library Science, or related field, and no experience required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the specific position as listed above.

Required Skills and Knowledge :

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to engage diverse learning styles and respond to information-seeking behaviors.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality, exercise judgment, and work independently.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including software applications and peripheral equipment.
  • Flexibility to adapt in a dynamic work environment.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge :

  • Education or experience in early childhood development or related field.
  • Experience conducting storytimes for children aged 0-5.
  • Familiarity with children’s literature and developmental stages.

Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to lift bins of books weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Shelving and arranging materials at various heights.
