Position Summary

The University at Buffalo School of Nursing (SON) invites applicants for a clinical faculty position to lead the development of new curriculum for a nursing midwifery program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME).

This is a half-time (12-month) appointment.

Responsibilities include :

  • Lead and develop new curriculum for a DNP accredited Midwifery program leading to certification as a midwife (CNM) and facilitate the approval process though the School of Nursing, University, SUNY / NYS levels, and the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME).
  • Lead and design courses, establish program objectives, and prepare syllabus to implement a DNP midwifery program to meet state and ACME standards.
  • Lead, plan, develop, and implement evidence-based, innovative, and interactive learning experiences for the adult learner across classroom and clinical learning environments for Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP), post-masters (DNP), and / or BS to DNP pathways.
  • Lead and foster scholarship of new midwifery faculty with expectations to publish, present, and disseminate scholarship / research regionally, nationally and globally.
  • Leads and maintains standards of clinical excellence / practice and adheres to ethical and woman centered professional standards of midwifery practice.
  • Leads and collaborates with faculty and community partners to plan, design, implement, and lead classroom, laboratory / simulated, and community-based practice student learning experiences.
  • Establishes collaborative and positive working relationships that respect the dignity, worth, and culture of students, faculty, staff, colleagues, peers, patients, families, communities, agency nurse managers, and interdisciplinary agency teams and staff to establish an innovative midwifery program.
  • Serves as a mentor and professional role model to facilitate and ensure the planning, implementation, and evaluation of learning experiences.
  • Leads the development of a curriculum that assists students with the transfer, utilization, and synthesis of knowledge into current learning activities and experiences at the advanced practice level through establishment of physical and emotional environments conducive to effective teaching and learning.
  • Engages and serves as a representative to the Directors of Midwifery Education (DOME).
  • Leads and establishes standards of practice designed to address the highest ethics required for advanced midwifery practice and early intervention / remediation through specific written guidance and referral to ensure academic and practice success of students.
  • Acts to comply with State, University, Clinical Agency, and professional regulations / requirements to establish the midwifery program.

  • Doctoral degree (DNP / PhD) and national certification as a CNM.
  • Minimum of ten years clinical experience as a CNM.
  • Experience developing curriculum for CNM programs at the doctoral (DNP) level.
  • Previous experience teaching in classroom and / or online environments.
  • Experience with clinical simulation / practicum student supervision.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, across the spectrum of academic, regulatory agencies and when engaging with students, faculty, and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous administrative experience as a Midwifery Program Director with experience at the rank of Professor / Associate Professor.
  • Five years of experience teaching in classroom and / or online environments.
  • Previous experience with supervising students clinically and using clinical simulation to achieve program outcomes.
  • Previous experience preparing documentation leading to accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME).
  • Previous experience leading and fostering scholarship focused on improving midwifery standards of care in a cultural context with faculty and students at a regional, national and / or global level.
