Position title : Senior Manager of Urban Forestry Programs

Type of Position : Staff (Full-Time)

Groundwork USA is the only network of local, people-centered organizations devoted to transforming the natural and built environment of under-resourced communities a national enterprise with local roots, working at the intersection of the environment, health, equity, youth empowerment, and civic engagement.

Through inclusive, meaningful community engagement and cross-sector collaboration, local Groundwork affiliates called Trusts transform neglected land and waterways into assets that under-resourced neighborhoods need to be healthy and resilient while building community capacity to improve systems.

Groundwork USA seeks a Senior Manager of Urban Forestry Programs to support the Groundwork USA Network in undertaking an ambitious urban forestry, workforce development, and community stewardship initiative funded by the USDA Forest Service.

We are seeking a dynamic and passionate Senior Manager to lead our Urban Forestry program. This role is pivotal in driving sustainable community development and environmental stewardship and will serve as the lead in building, launching, tracking, and evaluating a program focused on planting and maintaining urban trees in no fewer than 15 communities, nationwide.

Sitting within the division of Climate, Land, and Water, the Senior Manager of Urban Forestry Programs will lead the implementation of Groundwork USA’s Urban and Community Forestry grant, a five-year program to advance the equitable distribution and health of trees in under-invested-in communities.

The program aims to plant trees in low-canopy areas; develop tree ambassador programs in Trust communities to improve survival rates of new and existing trees;

and strengthen existing tree-focused workforce development programs run by our Trusts.

This is a fully remote position; candidates residing in our Trust cities are especially encouraged to apply. Note that some travel is required including, but not limited to, an annual staff retreat, our annual network-wide gathering, and site visits to Trust communities.

JOB DUTIES

Responsibilities include :

  • Establishing meticulous project management protocols, including working with the federal grants manager contracts and grants, ensuring adherence to federal guidelines, and tracking project outcomes for efficient execution.
  • Establishing systems for tracking outcomes and ensuring completion of deliverables.
  • Meeting frequently with grant recipients to review progress, assess emergent opportunities, identify project support needs, and troubleshoot barriers.
  • Uplifting best practices, Trust wins, and new opportunities to our network and the broader urban forestry community.
  • Working both independently and collaboratively to develop shared resources, workshops, and tools on a variety of urban and community forestry topics.
  • Establishing active and supportive learning cohorts and trust-to-trust learning opportunities in key areas of equity, climate adaptation, workforce development, and forestry.
  • Leveraging economies of scale to find economic and programmatic efficiencies, including leading the bulk procurement and distribution of materials, certifications, technology, and tools.
  • Arranging shared services, workshops, trainings, certification programs, and trust-to-trust visits to build Trust and community capacity to meet tree planting, maintenance, and community engagement goals.
  • Working closely with Trusts and the Groundwork USA communications team to uplift stories and impacts.
  • Cultivating existing and new partnerships with public- and private-sector entities whose expertise contributes to the Groundwork Network’s ability to effect change.
  • Providing urban-forestry and workforce development related technical assistance to communities- within and external to our network- through coaching, workshops, and presentations.
  • Working with the Federal Grants Manager on the development and rollout of trainings, templates, and checklists to ensure subgrantee compliance with federal regulations.
  • Representing Groundwork USA in national partnerships and diverse public settings, including at conferences, on webinars and workshops, and in meetings with partners.
  • Contributing to grant proposal development and reporting.
  • Collaborating with the Climate, Land, and Water team members to expand the capacity of staff, network members, and the broader sector to engage in equitable urban forestry projects.
  • Helping nurture a collaborative, high-performance culture in a geographically dispersed staff.
  • Contributing to Groundwork USA’s continued progress as an inclusive, culturally competent organization.
