Description The University of Silicon Valley is hiring an Academic Advisor who is responsible for supporting student learning and skill development.
This position will support students in all programs.
The Academic Advisor will work independently and with a team of advisors under general supervision to provide academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in all majors in the University.
The person in this position advises students on academic requirements and procedures, provides support for students facing a variety of moderately complex institutional and personalproblems, connects students to appropriate resources on campus to foster student success, and advocates the needs of individual students and groups of students.
Working with the faculty and management team, the advisor participates in assessment processes, provides professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students, and supports University initiatives on enrollment, retention, persistence, and graduation.
Key responsibilities will include :
- Advise students on establishing academic goals, through the development of educational and graduation plans
- Provide additional support for students in academic jeopardy
- Maintain student files and records; document all pertinent student information and update Student Success Plans regarding changes to student status
- Engage in outreach and communication efforts with students to support university-wide student success, retention, and completion efforts, including but not limited to phone calls, texts, and emails
- Assist students with negotiating University processes and procedures
- Assist with the development and implementation of departmental programs, including but not limited to New Student Orientation, peer mentoring, or other initiatives as assigned
- Teach the university preparatory & skills classes for first-year students and students who are on probation under the supervision of the Dean of Students
- Make referrals to the on-campus counseling services and / or social service agencies and assist with locating other referral sources as needed
- Adhere to laws, external regulations, internal policies, procedures, and requirements governing areas of responsibility
- Other related duties and projects as assigned
- Monitor attendance daily and reach out to students missing from class
- Assist students with registration for the next trimester
- Monitor registration and follow up with those students not yet registered
- Work with students to resolve obstacles to full-time attendance
Qualifications
Education :
Bachelor’s degree with coursework in Education; Human Relations; Psychology; Human Services; or College Student Personnel, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience :
One to two years of experience in Higher Education in Student Affairs, or a master’s degree will supplement the years of related work experience in a higher education environment.

- Ability to get along with diverse personalities and exhibit tact, diplomacy, discretion, and empathy
- Excellent verbal, written, and listening skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality as appropriate
- Self-directed with the ability to work independently
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Working knowledge of Campus Nexus, Canvas, or similar Learning Management and Student Management Systems
