Job Description
The departments of History and Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech seek applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Middle Eastern Studies.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach 3 courses per semester split between the two departments; these will include the 2-sequence course on the history of the Middle East, the introductory course on Islam, and other courses closely related to the successful candidate’s specialization.
The VAP will have the opportunity to participate in research related to their specialization. In addition, the successful candidate will be encouraged to contribute to the intellectual life of the departments, the university, and / or the local community, through the participation and planning of events, public talks and presentations, or other opportunities.
The selected candidate will work with the Chairs of History and Religion and Culture to determine which department is better suited to be their home department.
In addition to their CV and a list of three references including contact information, applications should include a letter of application that outlines the candidate’s teaching experience (including accomplishments in teaching and mentoring underrepresented and underserved students), teaching philosophy, and research accomplishments.
Preference will be given to applications demonstrating teaching excellence.
Required Qualifications
- PhD or doctoral degree conferred by August 20, 2024 in History, Religious Studies, or a closely related field
- College-level teaching experience, including the ability to teach courses on history of the Middle East and Islam
- A strong research agenda in a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- A record of teaching excellence in higher education, with accomplishment in teaching and mentoring underrepresented and underserved students
- Breadth and versatility in teaching courses related to the history and religions of the Middle East
