Job Summary
Under the direction and reporting to the Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for managing a full portfolio of high-end annual and major gifts prospects for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors.
The Major Gifts Officer is expected to develop and implement strategies for cultivating relationships, projects and needs with donor interests, researching donor capacity and donor interrelationships.
The Major Gifts Officer will also play an active role in the University's comprehensive campaigns.
Responsibilities
- Generates unrestricted and designated support towards an annual financial goal through the solicitation of an assigned portfolio of prospects through face-to-face visits, email, and telephone (may carry a portfolio of up to 150 prospects)
- Manages all aspects of a portfolio including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of assigned prospects
- Organizes efficient visits for the purpose of meaningful and strategic donor interactions each fiscal year (visit quota will include 85-115 visits per year).
Visits should be focused on individual solicitation and donor qualification
- Participates in regular individual portfolio review
- Works closely with VP and collaborates with internal departments to develop meaningful stewardship pieces and opportunities working in conjunction with the Director of Donor Relations
- Develops proficiency with Raisers Edge
- Enters all pertinent information including descriptive contact reports, future steps, and plans within designated time frame
- Maintains up-to-date information in the database on significant prospect contacts regarding solicitations and evaluations including capacity, prospect interests, and demographic changes
- Supports Vice President with creating, coordinating, and / or disseminating reports as it pertains to regional travel and portfolio management, as requested
- Participates in division-wide and university-wide events, committees, and project teams to advance priority projects of the University
- Manages all Advancement Events throughout the academic year
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Experience in development or a related field (e.g. sales)
- Strong background in philanthropy and demonstrate a keen interest in and appreciation for the values and mission of Clayton State University
- Possess a valid U.S. Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Demonstrates organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks concurrently
- Ability to use Microsoft Office suite, understanding of CRM databases, and familiarity with the evolving use of web and social media to engage donors
- Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision making to achieve institutional objectives
- Negotiation skills and an ability to work in a collaborative environment
