The Opportunity PT&E is a youth development nonprofit working to ensure every student involved in our K-12 program graduates high school on time with the opportunity and tools to pursue the post-secondary path of their choosing.

Since our founding nearly 30 years ago, 100% of PT&E graduates have met this goal. Each year, PT&E provides each student in our year-round programs 1000 hours of positive, structured, out-of-school time focused on academic support, tennis and athletic enrichment, life skills and mental health support, and family resources.

PT&E is also proud to call home our three-court tennis facility, formerly known as St. Johns Racquet Center, a longstanding community hub in North Portland open to the public for lessons, court rentals, and more.

We aim to make tennis and pickleball welcoming and inclusive for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, and identities, and 100% of revenue from the tennis center goes back into serving the community.

Position Details Administration of Youth Tennis Program ( 30%) Develop Demand-Driven Youth Tennis Programs : Identify and implement on-court programming that drives participation and growth among youth tennis players.

Oversee and Expand Youth Leagues : Manage existing leagues and establish new ones to provide competitive play opportunities for young athletes.

Coordinate Youth Events : Plan, promote, and execute all aspects of youth tournaments, camps, and special events. Manage Supplies and Equipment : Oversee purchasing and inventory management for all necessary supplies and equipment.

Advance Program Scheduling : Ensure all youth programs are added to the CourtReserve system at least one month in advance for online booking.

Collaborate Across Programs : Work closely with Adult Tennis and Pickleball Leads to create a balanced and well-coordinated programming schedule across tennis and pickleball.

Scheduling & Coverage : Set weekly / monthly coach schedules and coordinate coverage for time-offs / call-outs. Programming & Promotions : Assess current programs for growth opportunities, collaborate on promotion needs, adjust pricing structures for mission alignment, and contribute to unified outreach efforts including distributing tournament opportunities across patron groups.

Metrics & Planning : Review court utilization and financial data monthly, align upcoming programming with patron demands, adjust staffing, and coordinate quarterly program planning.

On-Court Coaching ( 60%) Provide On-Court Coaching : Deliver high-quality coaching for players of all ages and skill levels.

Strategically Balance Coaching : Combine coaching efforts across public and nonprofit programs, youth and adult players, and various class types to maximize impact.

Conduct Private Lessons : Offer approximately 5 private or semi-private lessons per week. Hourly Coach Oversight ( 5%) Establish and Communicate Schedules : Clearly define and share coach schedules, ensuring smooth operations and coverage.

Oversee Time Cards and Hours : Manage time cards for hourly coaches, ensuring compliance with overtime regulations. Recruit and Expand : Hire staff to address coverage gaps and boost revenue potential through additional programming.

Mentor and Lead by Example : Serve as a mentor and role model, upholding professionalism and ensuring coaches meet program standards under your supervision.

Leverage Skilled Volunteers : Incorporate skilled volunteers into youth coaching roles whenever possible. Address Performance Issues : Identify and escalate performance or professionalism concerns to your manager, collaborating on appropriate actions.

Additional Projects & Opportunities ( 5%) PT&E fosters a collaborative culture, where every team member is dedicated to embodying our staff-defined core values and guiding principles.

In this spirit, you may occasionally be called upon to assist with other team projects or organizational initiatives beyond your regular responsibilities.

The Details Critical Success Factors USPTA or USPTR Certification Required : Must have coaching experience and hold active certification with USPTA or USPTR.

Onsite Commitment : Must be available to work onsite at the PT&E facility in St. Johns for a minimum of 40 hours per week.

Ambassador for PT&E : Act as a positive representative for PT&E, both internally and externally, promoting a collaborative atmosphere and upholding high standards of professionalism.

Collaborative Partnership : Proven ability to collaborate closely with coaching staff, administrative teams, volunteers, and external partners to support youth tennis initiatives.

Cultural Competence : Experience working with youth from diverse cultural, academic, athletic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.

Leadership Experience : A minimum of three years’ experience in tennis coaching / leadership, program development, or a similar role focused on youth sports or education.

Brand and Program Promotion : Ability to increase visibility and awareness of youth tennis programs through effective marketing, PR, and communications strategies.

Relationship Building : Strong track record in cultivating and sustaining relationships to support youth tennis growth. Equity & Inclusion Lens : Deep understanding of how identity, equity, and inclusion intersect with youth development, bringing practical solutions to ensure inclusive programming.

Leadership & Mentorship : Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring coaching staff and volunteers, with a servant leadership approach.

Entrepreneurial Mindset : Encourages innovation and celebrates the achievements of both staff and youth participants in the tennis program.

Project Management : Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, including program scheduling, leagues, and day-to-day operations, while maintaining high standards in a fast-paced environment.

Organizational Skills : Exceptional organizational and planning skills, with meticulous attention to detail in program execution and logistics.

Self-Motivated & Proactive : Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently, take initiative, and effectively manage up to leadership when necessary.

Compensation + Benefits This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position, averaging approximately 40 hours per week. The annual salary for this position is $50,000 to $57,000, depending on experience and qualifications.

After 30 days of employment, we offer health and dental insurance through Kaiser, as well as eligibility to participate in the Oregon Growth Savings Plan.

The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, with flexibility depending on program schedules. Occasional evening and weekend availability is required for special events.

PT&E provides exempt employees with accrued PTO, paid federal holidays, and a personal learning and development stipend to support professional growth.

The Youth Tennis Lead will receive dedicated mentorship and guidance from their supervisor, with a focus on personal and professional development through PT&E’s Performance Excellence program.

A pre-employment background and reference check is required for this position.
