HLR is looking for a qualified Senior Environmental Scientist to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will manage a variety of environmental work on both transportation and utility projects.

Ensuring that each project is completed according to established objectives, within budget, and on schedule to meet our client's needs and expectations is crucial.

The Senior Environmental Scientist will also assist with training environmental scientists in field and office tasks.

Our ideal candidate will have an excellent understanding of environmental and natural sciences, and knowledge of federal, state, and county requirements.

Duties And Responsibilities

Manage a variety of environmental work on both transportation and utility

  • A c cu r a t ely s c ope e n vi r onme n tal tasks, permits and timelines r equi r ed t o c ompl et e municipal, transportation, and utility projects
  • D eleg a t e tasks t o most e f f ecti v ely utili z e st a ff skill s e ts
  • C ompl et e and / or o v e r see p r oject tasks t o ensu r e critical p a ths a r e m e t
  • W ri t e and / or r e vi e w r eports and permitting submittals
  • C omplete and QA / QC field work including wetland delineations and other environmental studies
  • A t t end p r oject me e tings in the field or o ffi c e
  • E ffectiv ely communicate with coworkers, colleagues, and clients to build and maintain a team-based atmosphere and deliver a superior client experience
  • D evelop project scopes and cost estimates, and manage projects effectively within those budgets
  • M ana g e p r oject administ r a tion activities

Assist with the training of environmental scientists in field and office tasks

Education

Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in biology, botany, environmental science, geology, or related field

Required Experience and Skills

  • 8+ years of work experience in the environmental field
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and County requirements
  • Knowledge of Midwestern native plant communities, and native and invasive plant identification and terminology skills

Training and experience in the following areas :

  • E n vi r onme n tal studies such as t r ee sur ve y s, th r e a t ened and endan g e r ed species sur ve y s, and vegetative floristic quality assessments
  • E r osion and sedime n t c o n t r ol best mana g eme n t p r acti c es
  • Experien c e w orking with e n vi r onme n tal, r egul a t ory and land use a g encies, such as : U .S. Army Corps of Engineers, S.

Fish & Wildlife Service, Kane, Lake, DuPage, McHenry County Stormwater Ordinances and permitting, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Illinois State Historic Preservation Office

Nice-to-Haves

  • Water and soil contamination testing and analysis experience (CCDD, PESAs, Ph 1 ESAs, and PSIs)
  • Certified Arborist
  • Stormwater management inspection and compliance documentation (CPESC / CESSWI / DECI)
  • Experience with design and construction oversight for green infrastructure
  • Experience with obtaining environmental grants
