Job Title : Chief Engineer

Location : Los Angeles-West, CA

Job Summary :

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of a hotel's mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, in accordance with BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) standards.

The individual will lead and supervise the engineering team to ensure the hotel operates efficiently, safely, and within regulatory compliance.

This role involves overseeing building system performance, managing vendor relationships, responding to guest-related issues, and supporting sustainability initiatives to maintain guest satisfaction and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Hotel Facility Management : Oversee the daily operation and maintenance of all building systems in the hotel, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems, to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for guests and staff.
  • Guest Services : Collaborate with hotel management and staff to resolve issues impacting guest comfort, such as room temperature, plumbing concerns, and other building-related complaints, ensuring swift and effective resolutions.
  • Team Leadership : Supervise and train a team of engineers, ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety protocols, and hotel operational needs.
  • Preventive Maintenance : Develop and implement a preventive maintenance schedule for all equipment and systems to ensure optimal operation and minimize downtime, with particular attention to guest rooms, public areas, and common spaces.
  • Emergency Response : Lead the response to building emergencies, such as power outages, mechanical failures, and system malfunctions, with a focus on minimizing disruption to guests.
  • Vendor Coordination : Manage relationships with service providers and contractors to ensure timely, high-quality repair and maintenance services for the hotel.
  • Energy Management : Monitor hotel energy usage and recommend strategies for energy conservation and cost savings, focusing on guest comfort and operational efficiency.
  • Safety & Compliance : Ensure the hotel complies with local, state, and federal regulations, including safety standards, OSHA, and fire codes.

Maintain proper documentation and certifications.

  • Budget Management : Assist in developing and managing the engineering department's budget, including expenses related to repairs, maintenance, and capital improvements specific to the hotel industry.
  • Sustainability Initiatives : Implement and promote green building initiatives that align with the hotel's sustainability goals, improving energy efficiency and guest satisfaction.

Qualifications :

  • Experience : Minimum 5 or more years of experience in building engineering, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role in hotel facilities management or engineering.
  • Hotel-Specific Knowledge : at least have a strong knowledge of hotel building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire systems, guest room technology, etc.

and preventive maintenance procedures within the hospitality industry.

Certifications : BOMA certification is preferred, along with relevant trade licenses (e.g., HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing).

Hotel engineering certification or equivalent experience is highly desirable.

  • Leadership Skills : Proven ability to lead a team, manage multiple priorities, and work under pressure in a fast-paced hotel environment.
  • Problem-Solving Skills : Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a proactive approach to building system issues that impact guest experiences.
  • Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with hotel management, guests, and vendors to ensure high-quality service.
  • Software : Proficiency in building automation systems and facility management software, with experience in hotel property management systems (PMS) being a plus.
  • Physical Requirements : Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy equipment, working at heights, and operating power tools.

Education :

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field preferred.
  • Trade school certification in HVAC, electrical, or plumbing highly desirable.
