ABOUT THE CENTER

The Bowlus Fine Arts Center (BFAC), built in 1964, is a successful state-of-the-art facility located in southeast Kansas.

The Main Stage is a traditional proscenium stage with 742 seats, a full fly tower with a combination of counterweight and motorized line sets, and complete up-to-date sound and lighting systems.

The Creitz Recital Hall is an intimate acoustic space with a small stage. Seating is flexible up to 120 seated patrons. The Mary Martin Gallery is a small gallery for touring and community exhibitions.

The Bowlus possesses a permanent art collection and owns 9 pianos in the building, including 7 Steinways. The Bowlus programs up to 20 public events a year and 4 to 5 educational bus-in programs for surrounding school districts.

Two of the public events are the Iola Area Community Symphony Orchestra, which officially became a Bowlus program in 2018.

The local Iola School District 257 uses the Bowlus for all large assembly events and performances. The local Allen County Community College uses the Bowlus for one or two productions a year.

The rest of the calendar is filled with local rentals, including 2 to 3 dance companies, the Iola Community Theatre, County and City workshops and speaking events, and other small community meetings.

Recent facility upgrades within the last 6 years have been the East Entrance and ADA parking lot, Fire Alarm system upgrade, Main Stage Air Handler replacement, and the addition of a new parking lot with commissioned art sculptures to the south of the facility.
