Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Services Assistant (MSA) for NJMS- Infectious Disease Practice.
This position provides medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
The MSA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care.
The MSA must demonstrate competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care.
Among the key duties of this position are the following :
- Assists with receptionist, telephone, and filing duties.
- Displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcare team.
- Maintains an inventory of examination / procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety.
- Demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities, provides guidance for and acts as a role model for medical assistants in the clinical area.

- Graduation of a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.
- Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
- Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
Certifications / Licenses
Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components required.
- Demonstrated ability to speak clearly, write proficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Newark community preferred.
- Bilingual skills (English / Spanish) preferred.
- At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting preferred.
- NJDHSS HIV counselor certification strongly preferred.
Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds.
Assists with transportation services in the clinic.
Office environment. Moderate noise. Occasional (less than 1 / 3 of time) exposure to blood-borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.
