POSITION SUMMARY

The Compliance Officer ensures the organization adheres to legal and regulatory standards, as well as internal policies and procedures.

Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective compliance program that aligns with the mission and goals of UAII.

The primary focus will be identifying and mitigating compliance risks, conducting audits and reviews, and providing guidance to team members on compliance-related matters.

Additionally, this position will function as UAII's privacy officer, overseeing the development, implementation, maintenance of, and adherence to privacy policies and procedures regarding the safe use and handling of protected health information (PHI) in compliance with Federal and State HIPAA regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive compliance program that encompasses all relevant laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Monitor and assess compliance risks, identify potential areas of concern, and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Conduct regular audits and reviews to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Stay up to date with changes in laws and regulations that may affect the organization's compliance requirements.
  • Provide guidance and training to staff members on compliance-related matters.
  • Investigate and respond to compliance-related complaints, concerns, or incidents.
  • Assist with Licensing (tracking, updating, renewing) for the facility / clinics
  • Project Manage the Accreditation Process
  • Collaborate with Department Directors, ensuring internal policies and procedures are updated on a regular basis
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure that compliance requirements are integrated into their processes and activities.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of compliance activities, including reports, documentation, and training materials.
  • Provides measurable monthly reports to the COO and UAII Board of Directors; including and not limited to HIPAA compliance, audit outcomes, and risk mitigation.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies, auditors, and legal counsel as necessary.
  • Attend required departmental meetings as requested
  • Other duties as assigned or required to fulfill the purpose of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications :

  • Five (5) years of extensive experience in compliance, audit, or relevant work experience required
  • Proven senior-level experience working in a compliance role, preferably in a non-profit or social services organization.

Education & Experience :

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., healthcare administration, law, or business) is required.
  • Required certifications / credentials - CHC (Certification in Healthcare Compliance), CHCP (Certification in Healthcare Privacy Compliance), CHRC (Certification in Healthcare Research Compliance).
  • Strong knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and mitigate compliance risks.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational and documentation skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff members at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ethical and professional conduct with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

Confidentiality :

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information adhering to HIPAA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, Privacy Act, and UAII policies and procedures
  • This position has access to sensitive information, and a breach in confidentiality will be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination

Communication / Interpersonal Skills :

  • Communicate and deal effectively with people in a professional and courteous manner verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in English
  • Comfortable speaking in public, interacting one-on-one with employees at all levels in the organizations and vendors

Technology Skills :

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite (Mail, Calendar, Drive)
  • Working knowledge of virtual video platforms (Zoom, Google Meets)

Other :

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Available and willing to travel to other work sites as needed
  • Available to work evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the position

POSITION PREFERENCES

  • Experience working with the American Indian / Alaskan Native / Native Hawaiian community.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations, community groups, and performance-based government contracts
  • Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)

There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, and driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with staff and vendors.
